Explaining #WebDev To #SEOs: What Is A Headless CMS? 🔑 A headless CMS is when you separate the front end or presentation of your content from the backend or location where it is stored. 🔄 The result is that you can create unique ways to present different information based on certain criteria and can improve your content generation workflows as you are no longer restricted to a specific platform or online channel. Let’s use an example to drive this home! 🔍 You are an SEO working on an article titled “The Best Electric Vehicles For 2024”, as you put the finishing touches on it you are now ready to add it to the site! Option 1: Using a traditional CMS such as WordPress - You need to go into WordPress, copy and paste the content or add it as different content blocks then publish the information. - Once you publish the content it will be available only on your website. You can create shareable links to the website but that is the extent of it! Option 2: Using a headless CMS such as Sanity or Contentful - You go to your provider and copy and paste the content into the different elements created by the developer then you save it! - Once the content is published it can be placed onto your company’s website, mobile app, and any other place that you can reach your target audience! The Benefits Of A Headless CMS ✅ Customizable, Customizable, Customizable: You can use any tech stack to display your content. Don’t like PHP no worries, hate JavaScript you’re okay! ✅ Higher Leverage: You can write content once and redistribute it in any way shape or form that you want! The result is that you get more bang for your buck! ✅ Siloing Access: Worried about giving someone access to your marketing site? You don’t need to! You only need to give them access to a small area of your provider’s backend so they can add their content. Downsides Of A Headless CMS ❌ More Technically Complex: In the same way that its great that you can customize everything. You can also customize everything… The result is that you could easily make a mistake which breaks your content! ❌ Its More Expensive: Development isn’t cheap, and you shouldn’t cheap out on it either! When you introduce more technical complexity your budget can often run away from you. ❌ Overkill: While powerful, using a headless CMS for a simple application is like driving a high-powered sports car around town for errands. Sure it gets the job done but could the additional time you spent developing a headless CMS be better spent?
