Avian flu crosses species, infecting cats and cattle in Texas and Kansas As the world reacts to the news of an Avian flu strain crossing species into birds and cattle, PCR was instrumental in measuring the crossover event. The recent outbreak of Avian flu began with a Eurasian strain of the virus (H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b) and is of specific concern since it was detected in severe flu cases among humans in Chile and Ecuador. In animals, infected cattle showed reduced milk production and systemic illness, and approximately half of the cats that consumed milk from infected cows died from the contracted virus. The study underscores the importance of surveillance in domesticated animal populations to prevent the spread of avian influenza across species, and ultimately to humans. #pcr #pcrtesting #pcrindustrynews #avianflu #H5N1 #publichealth News Source: News Medical Life Sciences - https://hubs.li/Q02NnNNw0

URGENT ALERT: Avian Flu is killing Flocks and is Spreading to Animal Species The Avian flu is becoming transmissible to animal species, and the consequences are dire. Flocks are dying, herds are at risk, and the mortality rate can be over 50%. With 2 confirmed human cases in the US and one in Canada, the threat is real. Are we going to wait until this gets out of control AGAIN? Have we learned nothing from past outbreaks? Farms, companies, public buildings, universities, airports, hospitals, and especially nursing homes need to act NOW! Are we stubbornly waiting until it's at crisis levels before we put proven measures in place? If you're tired of trying to stop outbreaks by looking in the rearview mirror... You need to try Ultralyte Disinfectant! Ultralyte is proven to kill all 10 strains of Avian flu and is safe to use around your flock or herd. 📞 Call, 📱 text, or 📧 email us NOW to protect your animals and your community. Have you seen our latest video on bird flu yet? H5N1 bird flu is detected in many dairy herds in the US. There has also been a case of a person, who works with cattle, testing positive for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1). Researchers are alarmed by this development, as the virus has never been detected in ruminants. In this video, Prof Dr van der Poel talks more about the risks of bird flu in cattle and the chance of a worldwide spread. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/gQZp-sUu #poultry #birdflu #US #onehealth

Australia is the only continent free from H5 high pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) (clade 2.3.4.4b). The virus has spread rapidly between continents associated with the movement of wild birds and is causing global concern. Register for this webinar on Friday 4 Oct at 11am (AEST) and find out how Australia is preparing for a potential avian influenza outbreak through learnings from a simulation exercise, Exercise Volare.
Register now to learn more about the global bird flu situation and how we are preparing for a potential avian influenza outbreak through Exercise Volare. A live online event will be held on Friday 4 October at 11am (AEST). Exercise Volare was a series of scenario-based discussion exercises focussing on a hypothetical detection of H5N1 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) (bird flu) in Australian wildlife. The exercise series aimed to improve preparedness across agriculture, environment, health sectors to manage future HPAI outbreaks, and inform the management if H5 enters Australia. The avian influenza virus continues to be spread around the globe by migrating birds. This spring they will fly towards the poles for breeding. The much smaller land areas near the poles means the bird populations will be crowded. In turn, that crowding means the virus strains will mix and mutate. We have already seen that the avian influenza virus can leap to other animals, now it is showing up in cows and then to humans. I still expect that the avian flu will find its way into pigs (feral and farmed). Pigs have respiratory cells similar to both birds and humans. Transfer of virus elements within a pig could result in a virus detrimental to humans.

Hi folks, AgriNerds (Home of the WaterFowl Alert Network) just created a free interactive map (see link below) of the current HPAI outbreak that includes the 4 flyways in the continental U.S. and Canada. You can turn on and off various features (ex. want to create an animation of just wildlife HPAI detections during the winter of 2023 in Canada and the U.S). The tool is free and allows the users to visualize the outbreak in various ways. My biggest insight is that the combined Canadian and U.S. waterfowl surveillance system worked great to warn us at the beginning of the outbreak in Nov of 2021 but not as well in early 2022 in the Mississippi flyway where HPAI was detected in commercial flocks before it was found in wildlife (we ideally want the surveillance system to detect HPAI in wildlife as a warning). FYI: The Waterfowl Alert Network (WFAN) uses these type of data in our risk analysis which among other things integrates HPAI wildlife detections and increases in waterfowl abundance within 2km of farms in our current HPAI risk model. Happy mapping and if there are additional features you'd like included and or have your farms integrated into the tool fee free to reach out. https://lnkd.in/gx6tSgxm

🚨Breaking News! Alarming Update on Bird Flu Outbreak in Sub-Antarctic 🦠 CNN has reported that the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has taken a concerning turn, spreading from birds to mammals in South Georgia. Officials from the UK confirm cases in brown skuas, and now in elephant and fur seals. Bird flu can disrupt wild bird behavior and migration, altering ecosystem balance. It causes severe illness and high bird mortality rates. The virus, spread through bird droppings, can contaminate water and soil, contributing to environmental degradation. Concerns continue to grow about the impact of bird flu on the region's fragile ecosystem. Additionally, VOX reported that during 2022-2023, more than 72 million chickens, turkeys, and other birds raised for meat and eggs on factory farms have been killed and disposed of due to bird flu. This shows the concerning occurrence of bird flu in factory farms and provides us with another reason for why we must transition to a plant based food system and put an end to animal exploitation. #BirdFluOutbreak #AvianInfluenza #Virus #WildlifeHealth #PublicHealth #FactoryFarms #AnimalLiberation #ClimateJustice #Vegan #Veganism #VeganActivism #AnimalRightsActivism #PlantBasedFuture #PlantBasedDiet #CollectiveLiberation #ClimateAction #FoodJustice #FoodAccess #EnvironmentalJustice #Activism #SocialJustice
