Something happened this year at Bikes for Kids WI, the floodgates opened and we saw a steady stream of people in need of low-cost transportation who were unable to afford bikes on their own, more than ever before. The 2,500 bikes we've given away in 2024 have been distributed to all people in need, not just kids. Giving bikes to kids under the age of 11 is a critical part of our work because, if you don't have a bike as a kid, you won't have one as an adult. Beyond age 11, kids are often too embarrassed to learn to ride and they become focused on cars as transportation although they've yet to learn how expensive it is to own a car as those costs go far beyond the initial price of the vehicle. And yes, kids do use their bikes for economic mobility. Kids are often eager to work but when you're too young to drive, a bike provides access to those opportunities. They also help kids get to school and they reduce truancy for many of the kids we serve. Bikes provide access to opportunities. They are so much more than just a recreational option for the people we serve--they are a lifeline. Operation Fresh Start became a new distribution partner for us this year and that's how we connected to Calio and King, the two boys who helped us reach the new milestone of 2,500 bikes given away in 2024. Thanks to your generosity, youth from Halton and Hamilton will continue to access our Leader Within and Enhance Your Finance courses for free in 2025! REASONS TO DONATE: Our society faces a crisis: rising anxiety and stress among teens and young adults. Research shows that 70% of youth believe high schools should offer more personal finance education, and 70% of mental health issues arise before age 18. These findings highlight the urgent need for targeted prevention programs. Leader Within Peer Mentorship cultivates essential life skills to foster resilience for youth ages 14 to 24. By integrating emotional and financial literacy, we equip young individuals with tools to navigate life’s challenges. Our financial literacy workshops cover budgeting, saving, and investing, promoting economic stability and responsible money management. The Leader Within program complements this by providing coping mechanisms and stress management strategies that enhance overall well-being, empowering youth to face obstacles confidently.

Why shop small? As a small business owner, it is SO important to me to give back to my community. Small businesses like mine are actually ✨involved✨ in the community. When I saw the local K-9 Adoption Center needed white rice and canned chicken we decided to do something about this. Isabella’s Crafts and Customs donated a large box of white rice, as well as canned chicken, and a few of our bandanas. Why? Because it’s important to me to be involved in the community and give back to not only the place that gave me my sweet boy but helps many other sweet boys and girls like mine. And when someone asks “why shop small?” I bring this up. I bring this up because while it may be more convenient or somewhat less money to go to a large chain store, small businesses give back so much more to the community! Not only does your money make a direct impact on someone’s life and future, but supporting a small business gets more money circulating in the local economy and diversifies the local economy and businesses….AND small businesses are involved in and give back to the local community. So next time you’re deciding on where to buy your baked goods or dog bandanas, think about where your money is going. During Anti-Slavery Week, our CEO, Gordon Miller, stood alongside industry leaders at the Built Environment Against Slavery Conference and the Social Value Conference, sharing Ride For Freedom's vision of a world free from modern slavery.
