Another academic year done and dusted🥳🫶🏽!! By far the most hectic year so far🤣, and I’m hearing it gets worse than this. But I thank God that I’ve been able to conquer once again ☺️. ✨Some highlights from this academic year; 1. I served as the Chemical Engineering School Officer: My first time ever serving in a leadership position of this capacity. I gave my all to this role, some days I was literally asking myself who sent me work🤣, but that’s what comes with leadership and I’m grateful for the journey. 2. I served (still serving) as the Director of Research of the upcoming WattMUN, which is my university’s Model UN conference. You’ll hear more about this soon☺️. This will also be my first time participating in an MUN conference. 3. I ran for my first ever election (Executive of Academics). I didn’t win but I do t regret running at all! I enjoyed the experience and learned a whole lott. A lot more but I’ll save the full gist for my newsletter, so you should subscribe😘. Green technologies for the chemical industry 🧪 In the ‘ShapID’ project, nine Fraunhofer Institutes are developing practical methods and technologies for sustainable, green chemistry. Among other things, an innovative MTP demonstrator has been created that shows that the vision of modular, autonomous functional modules or process equipment assembly (PEA) is becoming a reality. Automation with the standardised Module Type Package (MTP) - a digital description of intelligent process engineering modules - is the key element for the rapid assembly and flexible, sustainable and resource-efficient operation of modular systems. We will be showing the demonstrator at ACHEMA 2024 at the Fraunhofer Chemie-Allianz stand. A big congratulations to Sorosh Mirfasihi for publishing his impressive work in the prestigious Chemical Engineering Journal (CEJ). This is truly a remarkable paper with significant value to our industrial partner, Unilever and other stakeholders. Setting up the experiment, calibration, data collection and analysis took nearly 3 years but it was definitely worthwhile given the potential impact of this work. Also a big thank you to Wrichik Basu, Claudio Fonte Philip Martin and Adam Kowalski for all their valuable contributions and supervision. This paper presents mixing times for a miscible Newtonian liquid mixture system with high viscosity contrasts in a stirred vessel and uses Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) to collect data. We have tested a range of additive viscosities, impeller designs, sizes, and speed. The most important aspect of this work is the novel correlations we have obtained for mixing time which incorporate a new dimensionless group that enables a more accurate characterisation of mixing behaviours. 2023 is a magical year, it marks my accumulative 10th year in A*STAR. I started my career in ICES in 2012, fresh out of my B.Sc, and spent 3 years exploring heterogeneous catalytic conversion of lactic acid to acrylic acid. Afterwhich I took a year hiatus from work for my M.Sc, which I was exposed to flow chemistry. I joined back A*STAR under IMRE, in a IMRE-ICES collaborative project, testing the feasibility of converting rubber to CNTs. But like all projects, it comes to an end and with IMRE's change of research directions, I moved on. I jumped right into polymer synthesis, building databases for machine learning predictions. In the meantime, I also studied aviation greases and developed expertise in rheology and SEM. I moved on to skincare formulation, then encapsulation, then nanomaterials, then photocatalysis, then waste valorisation. I was blessed to be given the opportunity to "test" out different fields, intrigued by all of them. My work today are parts of everything I had gained in the past, revolving around the broad topic of sustainability. Fast forward to 2023, I was transferred back to the all familiar place, except now that it had undergone a face-lift and is now ISCE2. In a blink of an eye, 10 years had passed. In 2023, I had also went through my oQE for my EngD and officially in my 2nd half of the candidature. I had also gotten my driving license after much considerations. The year had zoomed passed really fast this year. In the past, I had received lots of guidance and opportunities. Now, I feel I'm able to contribute back. Here, I have some things that I have in mind: 1) Develop waste valorisation methods that can be translatable to the industry. (with my EngD topic as a starter) 2) Share my experience and insights I had gathered over the years, on how to navigate through the world of research (in a non-scientist track). 3) Showcasing and promote works/publications that were done primarily by a non-scientist track colleague/student. Congratulations to our Stämmer of the Week, Alan Velazquez! In case you missed it, two prototypes of our flagship product, The Bioprocessor, together with four of its team members, traveled to BioArk’s facilities in Switzerland and came back with outstanding results. In the meantime, the rest of Bioprocessor’s team stayed to continue enhancing its features. You didn’t think they would just wait around, did you? Innovation doesn’t take any breaks. Originally from an electronics engineering background, Alan is part of this hard-working team. In the quest to provide an all-in-one solution, they iterated on the existing setups that traveled abroad. With no intention of idly standing by, they developed a new version that includes previously unseen features. Continuous inoculation was the goal, and where they set the target was where they got to. Alan's continuous learning allowed him to cement the electronic workings of the new model so that the fluidic works flawlessly and, as importantly, is automatable. By being a bit involved in everything and bringing his dose of curiosity to the table, he was able to leap verification testing, checking that everything was ready for biological testing. It involved a myriad of optimized parameters and acing a fluidic circuit. Thank you, Alan, for ensuring the integration of new modules into the Bioprocessor! (Psst! 😊 I am Dominique Lumpp from project A06. I am a chemist working at the Institute of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry at the Universität Hamburg in the group of Prof. Jakob Albert. 🚀 My task in the CRC is to develop and test a CNT-supported Ru-metal catalyst for the hydrogenolysis of glycerol. We are testing different metal combinations and CNTs in order to obtain an ideal catalyst. Afterwards, I will optimize the synthesis process for the catalyst so that when we are ready with the tailor-made CNT forest, we can transfer our knowledge from the powder system to the grown CNTs. 💡 I completed my school internship at Linde, where I gained an insight into the planning and construction of large chemical plants. From then on, I always liked the idea of transferring things from laboratory to industrial scale. In my master's thesis, I developed a catalyst that I tested in a multi-batch plant 🌍 I want to show the world that sustainable chemistry can be a better option than petroleum-based chemistry. 🤝 If I were to describe the CRC in three words they would be : 🔹revolutionary 🔹complex 🔹sustainable. #SMARTreactors #TUHH #Technischistdasmöglich #TUHamburg #engineeringtofaceclimatechange Hamburg University of Technology
