How do you deal with converting from peer to leader? How do you establish respect, without seeming like a tyrant? This month, I’m going to walk you through the easy steps that will assist you in establishing leadership amongst your former peers, or as the case may be for some, with a newly inherited team. Transitioning into leadership feels daunting, but with the right approach you can go through the first 60 days of your new role with confidence and set the right tone for collaboration. Food for thought: Everyone holds a leadership role in some capacity, guiding others in various ways. Imagine the leadership journey as trying to fold a fitted sheet. Just when you believe you've managed to smooth out one corner, another seems to pop up, requiring a fresh adjustment. It’s a continual process of adapting and refining, highlighting the ever-evolving nature of leadership.

In recent months, I’ve become hyper-aware of a certain hugely successful company’s leadership messaging, which seems to be very much around “we’re doing a fantastic job / we’re making great progress / recent performance is our best ever, but (there’s always a but) …there’s still a long way to go / lots of opportunity to improve / it could be better” (delete as appropriate, I’m sure you get the gist). This is led from the very top and seems to have been instilled within their business’s DNA. Less skilled leaders then take this approach and often go on to list all the areas where those “opportunities” still exist, and what started as a positive message quickly becomes hugely demotivational. Whilst I appreciate the sentiment of not becoming complacent, I do wonder whatever happened to unconditional praise and celebration? To allowing those who have performed well to enjoy their small moment of glory, without reminding them how much more you expect them to do?
