3 signs of a toxic work environment you’re failing to notice! 👇 Your workplace is supposed to be your second home. I’m not saying you have to be a family, hell no. But it shouldn’t sting your mental peace either. And the ‘hustle’ culture has made us think that it is okay to bear whatever comes our way in the name of ‘work’. This has happened with you as well, right? Well, here are 3 toxic signs of a workplace you might be failing to notice. I- “We’re like a family here” When as a new joinee, you’re told that you’re about to be a part of your new family, but you’re not considered as one. You’re asked to work long hours and do the tasks that do not come under your department and you can’t so no, because you’re a ‘family’. 2- “Work more, it will help you learn new things” Well, you’ve been hired because you’re a good learner already. It is a sign of a toxic work environment if you’re asked to work long hours and take your work home in the name of ‘learning’. Working beyond your office hours will drain you completely and hinder your capability to perform well. 3- “X person is manager’s favourite!” While it’s good to appreciate your employees for their hardwork, favoritism makes others feel less capable. If you see a person being your manager’s favorite, then it’s a sign of a toxic workplace. Because leaders are supposed to treat their team as an equal. That’s all. Navigating a Toxic Work Environment: Strategies for Success Sitting in a toxic work environment is just really tough. There are things, though, you can do to help safeguard your well-being and your career. Some of these strategies include: Set boundaries: Clearly define what works for you. Safeguard your time and energy by saying no when necessary. Seek help from trusted colleagues, mentors, or close friends. Sometimes just sharing your experiences will bring much-needed perspective and encouragement to your corner. Document everything: incidents, communications, and interactions. This might be important in protection and any future discussion with HR. Plan your exit: When the environment becomes unbearable, plan your next move. Update your resume, network, and explore opportunities that align with your values. Stay Positive: Never fail to find something that you may learn from. A positive attitude helps you be resilient and motivated all the time. Avoid Office Gossip: Never bring yourself to the level of involvement in such activities. Gossiping will only deteriorate the situation further and ruin your good reputation. Build Trust: You can have relationships of trust with others who think like you. There is a greater need for this network during difficult times. Follow what you can control: Pay attention to your work and responsibilities. Throughout the years, working at various places, I have learned a lot about setting boundaries at my place of employment. This year that is my main focus. Since our job, in a way, is our second home because we spend most of our time there, I've learned what I can put up with and what is non-negotiable. I prepared a presentation below where I share my story of working with a toxic boss, what I experienced, how it affected me, and describe some methods I used to cope with the situation. Have you ever been swamped with work, all thanks to the seniors? New location, new workspace, and new bosses, but the story remains the same: burdening the new hire with a heavy workload. It is like dumping your work on the new hire as if it never belonged to you. But do not worry, after years of working in a variety of settings, including schools, administration, and corporations, I have become an expert in dealing with similar situations. We all want to impress our bosses and show our value, but there's a fine line between being a team player and being taken advantage of. When your workload becomes overwhelming, it is time to take action. Sharing a few of my tried-and-true variations. Know thy enemy. 👀 Understand why your senior is offloading work onto you. Sometimes it is a genuine oversight; other times, it is "delegate and conquer." "No" is a complete sentence. 🙅♂️ Know your limits and don't be afraid to assert them. Politely but firmly communicate when you're at capacity and need help. Silence isn't golden when you're buried under a mountain of tasks. 🤐 Have an open and honest conversation with your senior. Use "I" statements to express how their actions are impacting you. Don't just complain; be part of the solution. 💡 Propose ways to redistribute tasks more evenly or streamline processes for greater efficiency. Paper trails" aren't just for lawyers. 📝 Keep a record of the tasks you're assigned and the time it takes to complete them. It's your ammo if you need to escalate the issue. You're not in this alone. 🤝 If the situation persists, don't hesitate to seek support from HR or a mentor. Sometimes a little backup is all it takes to tip the scales in your favour. Every challenge is an opportunity in disguise. 🌟 Use this experience to develop your communication, assertiveness, and problem-solving skills. You'll come out stronger on the other side. P.S : You're not a dumping ground for other people's work.
