How does everyone feel about virtual cashiers? The reduced operational costs are undeniable. Restaurant operators face rising rent and inflation, which influence supply-chain costs, and this could be a solution that helps them succeed. Additionally, virtual cashiers earn a multitude of what they’d make in their home countries but a fraction of what a locally-sourced worker would make in their position. I think one of the most important considerations is how this impacts the customer experience. Can language barriers frustrate customers? Is remote training sufficient for such a role where they have to serve a customer vastly different from themselves? It’s a complex topic to navigate. I’ll be keeping my eye on the developments, but it doesn’t seem sustainable without major improvements. #RestaurantTech #CX #EX

Nearly a month ago, I attended the Horecava, a moment that once again left me fascinated by the cultural differences between my two home countries 🇳🇱 🇩🇪 . In Germany, the focus is on traditional POS and table service, while in the Netherlands, cash is fading, and self-checkout is everywhere... everywhere! Why the difference? Security? Data protection? Tradition? 🤔 In Germany, the reliance on traditional POS cashier systems and cherished table service with human interaction prevails. In my meetings, I often hear, 'Not everyone has a credit card', 'Our employees only have cash on-site', 'Our table service is our USP' and 'IT creates a distance to our customers'. I respectfully disagree, I argue that a robust IT foundation can seamlessly complement the guest experience 🍽 💫 . From my perspective, whether it's order kiosks, NFC scans or AI-Based-Self-checkout systems hold the promise of optimizing operations in canteens and restaurants. These systems free up precious time for what truly matters for all parties: the guest experience. So, chefs can uphold food quality, the service guarantees seamless guest interactions, allowing guests to enjoy their lunch break. However, I realize the challenge might be to identify what aligns with the unique needs and culture of your local site.
