Inclusion is more than a buzzword; it’s a business necessity. At Microsoft, we’ve experienced firsthand how diverse perspectives fuel innovation and inspiration. Whether it’s our Indigenous, Black and African American, LGBTQIA+ employees, or the Disability Community during our dedicated awareness month, each unique identity enriches our daily work and the products and services we design with accessibility as a priority. It’s crucial for businesses to design with everyone in mind. This approach not only enhances lived experiences within our organizations but also allows us to leverage our platforms and outreach for a broader impact. Remember, when we embrace our authentic selves, we encourage others to do the same. Take a moment to hear from our employees and stories about innovation https://lnkd.in/gp8SnJNp and take a tour of our Innovation Lab with Solomon Stone Romney, Microsoft Accessibility Program Manager https://lnkd.in/g6hw7Qhy #InclusionIsInnovation #DisabilityAwareness

Last week I had the privilege of speaking with the incredible community of Google Women Techmakers about a subject I am extremely passionate about. Check out the video! Thank you to Tania Rodriguez Fuentes and Aimée Jasso for the opportunity and for making the magic happen. I do want to call out that the webinar platform selected for this session did not have built-in captioning functionality, thus this talk was not accessible to those with hearing loss. The team addressed the issue head-on during the session, and this was a very important learning experience. It also helps to highlight a pervasive issue in the tech industry: Many software packages and platforms do not include accessibility features as a standard. When accessibility is an afterthought, it makes our jobs -- as event organizers, facilitators, and conveners of all kinds -- more difficult. We have to think on our feet and create workarounds, lest members of our communities be left behind. Inaccessible tools are routinely used within organizations, making it all the more difficult for new employees with accessibility needs to onboard and fully engage. Ultimately, this causes overall low rates of participation in the workforce, in education settings, in civic groups, in society. We have to start somewhere. Selecting accessible tools and advocating for urgent development of accessibility features are easy things you can do early in planning processes to help move the needle.

"This message is so simple, yet it gets forgotten. The people living with the condition are the experts." - Michael J. Fox The quote by Michael J. Fox applies to almost all cases, but especially in the case of disability inclusion and accessibility. Brands and companies need to listen to their audience with disabilities to significantly and truly improve their products, services, and accessibility features. Lived experience is what actually made our Founder and CEO, Balázs Berecz realise that there is indeed a need for a common language when it comes to accessibility. 🌈 Celebrating Pride 2024: Embracing Radical Joy! 🌈 This year, Microsoft’s Pride campaign is all about celebrating 'Radical Joy’. In the face of adversity, the ability to inspire and spark change is something to celebrate. Even small steps of affirmation, resistance, and celebration can lead to meaningful progress. The heart of this movement is the LGBTQIA+ community, and at Microsoft, employees are the heart of the company. This year, eight Microsoft employees shared their stories of radical joy, reminding us of the why behind Pride and uniting us in furthering its mission. ‘Radical Joy’ is grounded in inclusion and acceptance, values that are important for Microsoft. The campaign’s designs unite 74 flags representing different LGBTQIA+ identities through vibrant abstract shapes, symbolizing the joy and power that radiates from and through the community year-round. For the first time, Microsoft is inviting everyone to leverage AI to create even more Pride by sharing your own stories with fast and easy AI-powered tools like Microsoft Designer and Clipchamp. All Pride assets are available on Figma and GitHub, where anyone can download and customize the campaign assets to spread joy this Pride. Let’s celebrate Pride 2024 by spreading acceptance, abundance, and harmony everywhere. Visit Microsoft.com/pride to learn more and share on social by using #MicrosoftPride and #Pride. Let’s spread the ‘Radical Joy’! 🏳️🌈 Dhanniya Venkatasalapathy Rashmi Handa Dipesh Verma (He/Him) Shalini Tiwary
