I’m cautious in my regard for BBC News, as its reputation for impartiality & fairness has been tarnished. But I have no such issues with this freedom of information request on local authority’s timeliness on EHCPs. This information is also available through the Department for Education statistical first release, but that’s never the most accessible format. This report may give a fresh impetus to those authorities highlighted for especially low rates of completion of EHCPs within 20 weeks. There are always solutions that can be implemented: better processes, greater communication, improved partnership working, temporary increases in staffing levels. Well done those authorities highlighted for good rates of completion. For parents & carers everywhere, and for children & young people waiting on essential support, this one core element of the SEND system must be a priority action. Here’s hoping this report is a catalyst for change.

In a 2023 nationwide survey of of 296 district officials, 284 principals, and 478 teachers, a concerningly large percentage of the group described the buildings they work in as too small, outdated, toxic, unconducive to instruction, and ill-equipped for students’ rapidly evolving and growing needs. There is great demand amongst our nation's educators and administrators for upgraded infrastructure, but the widespread issue over the lack of funding persists. The study Alice Goguen Hunsberger shares is an incredibly important one - we, as #TrustandSafety professionals can build the best tools or write the most clear policies, but if it’s not meeting the needs of women and girls, it is simply not enough. I often hear from our female and female identifying streamers that they are overwhelmed by all the tools at their disposal, overwhelmed in how to figure it all out, overwhelmed by how to balance build community with building boundaries to keep themselves and that same community safe. Alice is exactly right, we need to solve this problem as a collective, not just keeping the burden on girls and women.

Social media use in young people continues to be a tightrope walked between benefits and risks. Increased awareness, education and legislation can only be good.
