On 09/05 & 09/06, I spent the afternoon enjoying the seventh grade team’s acting skills at Pelion Middle School in Lexington County School District One as we continued Course 1 - Authentic Classroom Leadership. After distinguishing authoritarian, authoritative, detached, & permissive teachers’ words and tone, we discussed strategies for growing our authoritative tool kits at the proactive Tier 1 level of multi-tiered systems of supports (MTSS). #waybackwednesday #mtss #behavior #discipline #schooldiscipline #classroommanagement

What a great day spent with the staff at Allentown State School in Rockhampton. They got an insight into what it takes to become a high performing school - one where every student and every teacher flourishes! As James Clear says, “We don’t rise to the level of our goals. We sink to the level of our systems.” So what are the systems that high performing schools put in place to enable flourishing? Effective communication is so important in any organisation and schools are no different. We explored how to go beyond the golden rule (ie. do unto others what you would want done unto you) in communication, to apply the platinum rule of communication where we communicate with others they way they want us to communicate with them. Once you can do that, the key is then to put a system in place so you can consistently and effectiveness over and over again. Innovator - Advocate - Director, Multitiered Systems of Support (MTSS) at District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS)
The growing burden placed on school leaders is unsustainable. School leaders today are shouldering an ever-expanding list of responsibilities—far beyond the traditional role of educational leadership. They’re not just managing academic outcomes; they’re on the front lines of keeping students safe from threats like gun violence, navigating an increasingly complex maze of compliance documentation, and spending countless hours trying to recruit and retain qualified teachers amidst a growing shortage. This immense burden is unsustainable. We must ensure that school leaders have the support, resources, and time to focus on their core mission—providing quality education to every student. Otherwise, we risk burning out those who are essential to the success of our schools. Let’s acknowledge the weight school leaders carry and work together to lighten the load. #EducationLeadership #SupportSchoolLeaders
