I receive a ton of notes from AEs wanting a job at MongDB. Let’s break down what they almost all look like and how you can improve your job-seeking outreach. Here’s an example of what I usually receive: “I’m interested in speaking with you about the High Tech Account Executive positions MongoDB is hiring for. I want to apply for the position but wanted to get your insight on the role before applying. Are you available to talk tomorrow at 10:45am?” This is what this outreach sounds like to me: “I think I might want to work for your company. Can you teach me about it so I can decide?” Instead of putting the “burden” on the hiring manager, try this approach when you are reaching out: - share what you’ve learned about the company - share what you’ve learned about the role - share why you think you would be a good fit for the role - have a “low effort” CTA It might look like this: “Hey Kyle, Blown away at the market opportunity I’m seeing for MongoDB. Seems like the growth of AI is an accelerant for your go-to-market. It also seems like Mongo puts a major emphasis on rep development. Combining a huge market opportunity with dedicated rep enablement is incredibly appealing! I’d love to walk you through how I’ve led my team in pipeline generation and quota attainment the last two quarters to see if my skill set may be a good fit for your org. What’s the best way to ensure my application is reviewed by a member of your team?” The hiring market is challenging right now. Hopefully this post gives you some ideas on how you can differentiate yourself in your approach!

Follow up to my post yesterday about reaching out to hiring managers when applying to stand out. Kyle Asay gets TONS of people reaching out to him as the VP at MongoDB. Most people that reach out to him are looking for Account Executive positions, so use his example as a framework if you're looking for something else. My Top Learning after 3 months at MongoDB Operating Rhythmn is the most important skill a full cycle AE can develop. This includes all the time spent on: - territory management - outbound prospecting - meeting prep - in customer meetings - internal meetings & trainings It’s difficult learning how to manage your time. My biggest take away is to religiously block off your calendar for what’s revenue generating. Everyday you will see these 4 things on my calendar: 1. Daily Prep - look at marketing reports and territory to see what’s new 2. 1 hour of email prospecting 3. 1 hour of LinkedIn 4. 1 hour of calling (this is the hardest for me) As a new rep who needs pipeline…everything else is just…noise? Glad to be accelerating my growth like crazy thanks to great leaders and strong AE’s to look up to.

Day 3 documenting my job search after being laid off. Today's accomplishments: - More and More applications. Tailoring a resume to each application is time consuming to say the least, especially when you have to create an account and go through a 10 minute process for every application. - Decided to upgrade my website from a simple GitHub site to one that is hosted on AWS and automatically building and deploying using AWS Pipelines - Walked my dog. One time, in the late 200s or early-2010s, I walked up to the Facebook booth at the Percona* MySQL Conference. I was speaking at the conference - always fun - and the networking at the Expo floor is always fun too. Now, at that time, at least, the expo floor there was pretty much two groups: those selling database products and services and those looking to recruit. Facebook was in the second category. I'm happily self-employed, so I've never particularly tried to court the attentions of FAANG and friends - big company politics is not something I particularly enjoy or tolerate. Anyway, the fellows at Facebook greet me by saying "We're from Facebook." Straightforward, to the point - which is better than a sales spiel, I suppose. "What's a Facebook?" I respond evenly. Now, for those who don't know me well, I am rather difficult to read. (Ask Luke Bouley.) I did, in fact, know what Facebook was, but the fact that they thought "We're from Facebook" was enough introduction and enough of a sales pitch to get recruits onboard was slightly annoying to me. Their reaction? An about face; they turned around and left... their booth. I was standing, alone, at their booth. I am not sure where they went, exactly, but all three of them disappeared - much like Batman disappearing halfway through a conversation with Commissioner Gordon. After a few moments - I wasn't really sure what the correct response was in this situation - I, too, left. In the grand scheme of things, I don't know what this story means, but it's definitely something that happened. * I wrote "Percona" because that's who's running the MySQL Conference now, but it's quite possible it was Sun or Oracle running the conference at that time; I don't recall which year it was, and I've given talks there a couple times.
