Designing systems will give you more confidence and land more clients This is what REAL design systems are about: A design system is often about libraries, variables, and components. But REAL design systems mean so much more... A design system actually means 'designing smart.' It means having patterns and blueprints to think ahead. They help structure, learn, and scale challenges into solutions. Designing smart means: – Having the right workshop at hand – Turning repetitive tasks into blueprints – Turning annoying processes into a system – Knowing what questions to ask – Knowing how to listen – Knowing when your team burns out – Knowing what gives you energy – Having a process to get something done – Documenting layout patterns to overcome inconsistency – Knowing when to compliment a colleague What are your systems that give you a lot of joy? I was working with an architect this week who had told me her goal is to experience her presentations as "just as enjoyable as the rest of her work." We were focusing on her messages when a light went on for her. She recognized that one of her big problems was professional-wide -- that designers tend to fall in love with their ideas, and so spend all their time talking about the details inside of these ideas, instead of the difference that those ideas make -- the problems they solve, and the new outcomes they create. One of the biggest issues I see on AEC websites is ambiguous writing.  If you’ve spent any time on an architecture or designer site, you’ve probably seen what I’m talking about. It’s often found in the form of really lofty or fluffy language. Stuff that sounds nice. It’s supposed to convey inspired design or something like that. But most of the time, it’s just confusing because it doesn’t really say anything. Then, someone who wants to potentially hire the firm is meandering their way around the site, trying to figure out what the company even offers. And I get it. Most firms, especially in architecture, work in multiple practice areas. But if a prospect is having to hunt through menus to have a basic understanding of your services, there’s a problem. That’s why cutting the lofty words and using ones that convey the value of your work and who you serve can make a huge difference in a user’s experience on your site.
