Happy 4th! Celebrating the Fourth of July responsibly can make a significant positive impact on both the environment and the community. Instead of buying polluting firecrackers, consider these alternatives: 🇺🇸 Donate to Food Banks: Buy a bag of food for your local food bank or shelter. This not only helps those in need but also fosters a sense of community. 🇺🇸 Eco-Friendly Decorations:  Use reusable or biodegradable decorations for your celebration. This reduces waste and is better for the environment. 🇺🇸 Community Clean-Up:  Organize or participate in a community clean-up event. It’s a great way to give back and ensure that public spaces remain clean and enjoyable for everyone. 🇺🇸 Plant a Tree: Planting trees is a wonderful way to contribute to the environment. It’s a long-lasting tribute to Independence Day that benefits future generations. 🇺🇸 Buy food for animal shelters: Even a small bag of food goes a long way in helping our furry pals. 🇺🇸 Light Sparklers:  If you still want some traditional fun, opt for sparklers. They are less polluting than large fireworks and can be enjoyed safely. National Lighthouse Day – August 7, 2024 Lighthouses are incredible structures that are both beautiful and functional. On August 7, we celebrate National Lighthouse Day, which commemorates how these picturesque, historic landmarks have provided reassurance to visitors over the years. In 1789, the United States Congress passed legislation to ensure the protection of all federally funded lighthouses. If you've ever seen a lighthouse, you'll realize how they signify peace and stability to visitors. While lighthouse technology has improved throughout time, they were previously commonly employed to mark dangerous reefs, shorelines, and harbors. Today, we picture how a lighthouse's beam of light brought hope to individuals looking for shore in the middle of stormy seas and dark nights. How to Celebrate Lighthouse Day? Visit your local lighthouse National Lighthouse Day calls for lighthouses, when possible, to be open to the public. If you're within driving distance to a coast, today's the day to make a trip to one of these beautiful structures. Help preserve a lighthouse The American Lighthouse Organization is dedicated to preserving and protecting these historic structures. If you visit a lighthouse, consider making a small donation to its operating organization in order to continue providing public access. Paint a lighthouse Lighthouses are beautiful and they make for great artwork. Paint or photograph a lighthouse and give your pic to that relative who has a collection of lighthouse postcards.

Through the Kentucky Fried Wishes program, the KFC Foundation will award up to $1 million total to 100 nonprofit organizations in the United States. Twenty-five grants will be awarded per quarterly cycle. The remaining quarterly cycles for 2024 focus on the following areas: improving health and well-being (open for application in May 2024), including efforts such as mobile health clinic creation, playground improvements, domestic violence shelter upgrades, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities; expanding access to food and shelter (open for application in July 2024), including efforts such as food pantry remodels, community garden creation, building repairs and renovations, and beautification of community space; and caring for the environment and animals (open for application in September 2024), including efforts such as permanent wildlife conservation exhibits, a new vehicle for a mobile vet clinic, and park improvements. (The application window focused on empowering through education and training was open in February 2024.)
