IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) cover children with needs from speech to ADHD to autism to physical disabilities. They cover children ages 3 to 21, creating a plan that assists and supports a child through their entire academic career. We will discuss the process of gaining an initial evaluation for an IEP and disability services in the classroom setting, while also continuing to monitor the progress and possible adjustments. #SpecialEducationAdoption #AdoptionIsLove #SpecialNeedsAdoption #AdoptionRocks #PostAdoption #Parenting

If you have a child with a disability such as dyslexia, autism, dysgraphia, or an intellectual disability, it’s vital your child gets the help they need to succeed in school. Use these tips to help your child with learning disabilities. 📗 Play to your child’s strengths by giving them regular opportunities to work on subjects they enjoy. 📗 If easily distracted, consider one-on-one tutoring sessions. 📗 Use a “chunking” approach by breaking down large assignments into smaller, manageable tasks. 📗 Encourage your child to talk about their ideas out loud first before they begin writing. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a plan that outlines the support services and goals a student with a disability will receive in school: Purpose: IEPs are created to ensure that students with disabilities receive specialized instruction and related services. Who's involved: IEPs are developed by a team that includes the student, family members, advocates, and individuals from various educational disciplines. What's included: IEPs identify learning and behavioral goals, as well as objectives with specific measurable outcomes. Eligibility: Students with disabilities who are attending elementary or secondary school may be eligible for an IEP. Disabilities that may qualify a student for an IEP include ADHD, autism, cognitive challenges, and more. How to get an IEP: If you believe your child is struggling in school, you can write to your school and ask for comprehensive evaluations for special education. Related legislation: The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) controls the procedural requirements for IEPs. #AZDDD #WeCareForYou #disabilitycare #JBBHealthcare #DevelopmentalDisabilities

Executive function demands change in college! The only way that we can expect students to rise to these demands, is if we help them build needed #executivefunction skills well before their freshman orientation. As I shared last week, summer is a great time to work on building life skills, which often require planning and organization: https://lnkd.in/dzcbMp4V I wanted to kick off this week by passing along Elizabeth C. Hamblet's tips from TIME for teaching kids to get organized before college: https://lnkd.in/eTAxPe2h Two of the skills that I think are most critical to work on are waking up independently and learning to fully use and manage a calendar system of some sort (think not just about putting in appointments, but also learning to keep track of key information for those appointments). Another tip I would add for parents (and professionals) is simply to take notice any time you are doing something for your child/student and consider whether you can transfer that responsibility to the young person. If not, why? We all use help in adult life, but we "helping adults" can sometimes get into patterns of over-helping without even realizing we are in them. The first step to making a behavior change is noticing the behavior. What other tips for skill development would you add to my list or Elizabeth's for parents and students to consider ahead of the transition to college? #transitionplanning #transitionassessment #collegecounseling #lifeskills #parenting #teenagers

💡 We R excited to SHARE that the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center (#DDDC) has launched Scarlet Hope for Autism: The Road to Excellence in Education (SHARE), an innovative program committed to the success of students with #ASD in NJ schools. ❤️ The shortage of trained professionals, especially in under-resourced schools, is striking.
