Back to School - Tip 2 Bookasaurus turned over the page of his calendar to September and said ‘so mummy what’s happening?’ He loves steam trains 🚂! Autistic children like to know what’s happening in advance it helps them to feel comfortable. I told Bookasaurus that he had an inset day and I had a fun day planned (of course he wanted to know the specifics) then he was back to school and Nana and Grandad were picking him up after school one afternoon. He wrote the plans on his calendar 📅! Giving children the gift of predictability makes a huge difference to their lives. Visuals like pictures, photos, a visual calendar, or telling them what is happening next works really well. You’re the most important person in your child’s life so letting them know where you are will also reassure them. Imagine your child having a smooth first day back to school, how great would that feel? If you would like help with something then just let me know. Feel welcome to share this tip with a special mum who would really love to help her children. #learningtoloveautism #backtoschool #backtoschoolpreparation #schooluniform #backtoschoolproblems #transitions #routine #asd #sensoryprocessing #reducinganxiety #adhd #predictability

Children often don’t know how to ask for what they need - or more particularly for what they don’t know they need. Especially our neurodivergent children. They communicate through their behaviour. Psychologically, if you empathetically connect with them, believe in them, meet them where THEY are & not where you want them to be, they will have a much healthier foundation for relationships in the future. #boundaries #communication #empathy #emotionalintelligence #behavioir #autism #ASD #autistic #educator #author #publicspeaker #ADHD #ADD #ODD #PDA #neurodivergent #relationships #connection #inclusion #noncompliance

Executive functioning skills are general life skills that help individuals manage their daily tasks and responsibilities. There is no consensus as to what these skills are, but they are skills like: - Organisation - Keeping track of possessions - Planning and Execution - Staying focused and not getting distracted - Controlling impulses Children learn these skills to a greater or lesser extent via play and via interaction with other children and adults. For example, the game ‘Simon says’ is very good for developing focus and control of impulses. Make believe games are good for developing organisational skills, and board games are good for learning to handle failure and losing whilst not over-reacting when winning. Engaging in general conversation is good for learning to shift focus from one topic to another.
