Obviously. The tagline at the bottom of election yard signs... ... right up until last week at this time. If you are still looking to blame others, continuing the name-calling (the lowest form of conversation), you can stop reading here... ...if you want to understand what happened better, how can you broaden your circle of "friends?" As we have become more and more polarized, we have slipped into bubbles of our own making. Finding it difficult to relate to those who "think differently" and simply to "understand" and not change their opinions to the 'obvious' right answer. Braver Angels tries to build that capacity, not be perfect but at least a start. There, you will hear about the "other sides," hopes - AND fears... and then have to do that for YOUR position... Will you find that you share a lot of both? Next, what are you reading? Is it recirculated thinly researched stories with headlines laden with "massively emotional" clickbait? There are great resources at AllSides, where you can not only see the bias of the press you read. Do you want to find your own political biases and how to interpret and read the "other" side? Then how can you engage - bravely? Not arrogantly, but with purpose, as Stephen Covey said wisely, "Seek first to understand... " Can you Listen more than you talk? I have found that punctuation matters. Obviously? That is an offer to understand your perspective, your story, and your path... that is different than mine. How can you change your punctuation to learn more than you think you know? And of course, a song that captures this from my youth, which the greatest court jester offers - with a question mark. To include the last verse or to not? This song is over 100 years old, the recording 96. It describes a stranger who promises his audience of young lads wonders, riches, and joys unheard of if they choose to follow him. What doesn't come over is why he'd offer these things. What are his motivations? These are explained in the forgotten last verse, which was most likely deemed unfit for audiences then and, certainly, now. Let's just say the young lads do not get their rock candy. Not really. If you leave the verse in, it all makes sense, you know what the singer is trying to say, you realize the world is an imperfect place and you take steps to improve it. If you remove it, you run the risk of awakening naiveté. Listeners may actually believe there really IS a place where alcohol flows from the rocks, where there's a lake of stew and of whiskey, too, where cigarettes grow on trees next to lemonade springs, and where there's no work and you never have to change your socks. On the other hand, most people are smart enough to pick up the ominous undertones, that you don't get anything in this world for free, and that by following serpent-tongued waywards like this one you're in for a world of hurt. Why? Who told us of this reality? How did we learn of it? I think Esther Pinto summed it up well "Here’s my take: if a product is “free,” it’s not really… you’re paying with your data. So, don’t expect privacy to be a big focus 🙈🙊🙉 And remember, when you try out new technology, you’re often part of the test.."
