🚨QUESTION TIME🚨 How to proceed with the CFD of an F1 car? Do we finish the model and run a whole car CFD or Do we start with front wing, see its flow behaviour and model the downstream parts accordingly? #cfd #aerodynamics #f1 #ansys #ansysfluent

The 2026 Regs have dropped. I have recently thought that F1 has gone too far in reliance on aerodynamics. My solution was to allow the front and rear wing to remain (they make great billboards) but only at Zero Cord, i.e. they are horizontal to the track surface. The new Regs have bought in a similar concept (reducing drag and influence on the following car) but with mechanically moveable (adding weight and systems complexity / failure rate) aero devices (wings). The new electrical advantage available throughout that lap only on the straight doesn’t offer much tactically usable “over-speed”. TBH, F1 is moving further away from relevance to road cars, you can’t put wings on a euro-box and expect it to survive as a production model. But increasing mechanical grip benefits all road usrs. As mechanical grip increases, they may have to revise mechanical aero usage. The eternal arms race between designers and regulators. https://lnkd.in/eth_89ef

Typical road-going vehicles can brake at somewhere around 0.7 g to 0.8 g, with peaks just above 1 g. Now imagine braking at 6 g's, more than 6 times what is achievable in a normal car. Straight up fighter pilot stuff in an F1 car.
Why These F1 Brakes Cost £50,000

We still remember it as if it were yesterday. The launch of the phenomenal McLaren P1 fitted with an innovative IPAS petrol-electric powertrain comprising a substantially revised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, coupled to a single electric motor, collectively known as M838TQ. Yesterday, a decade later, the all new McLaren W1 was presented. A ground-breaking successor to two of the greatest supercars of all time – the McLaren F1 and McLaren P1. Now fitted with an all-new 4-litre twin-turbo 90-degree V8 engine combined with a power-dense E-module. The exhaust manifold of this engine feeds large capacity twin-scroll turbochargers. The turbine and compressor have been optimized to deliver higher peak power and a significant increase in torque throughout the speed range. Up to 30% greater torque is available giving instant response from as low as 2500rpm. The compressors feed the engine through charge coolers, with low-volume intake manifolds connected directly to the intake ports to maximise performance and transient response. #McLaren #McLarenAutomotive #McLarenW1 #W1 #McLarenP1 #P1 #McLarenF1 #F1 #Tachyon #TachyonEngineering #Turbochargers #Turbo #Engineering #TwinScroll
