My latest short cinematic film, "Heart of Humanity," is now on YouTube! 🎬✨ With so much noise in the world today, it's almost too easy to get distracted, often caught up in what has happened in the past or focused on the anxieties of the future. These distractions tend to pull us further away from the present moment—moments that are right in front of us, allowing us to connect with, love, and support our environment and one another. This video, although short, marks a significant step forward in my journey as a filmmaker. Combining my own footage with clips from Motion Array, I delved into color grading SLOG 3 footage and custom sound design to create a piece that resonates with the moments that connect us all. In the realm of historical filmmaking, every detail matters. Marine coordinators, with their deep understanding of nautical history, become architects of authenticity. From the design of period-appropriate vessels to choreographing epic sea battles, their expertise ensures that the cinematic portrayal resonates with historical accuracy. Picture the challenge of recreating the splendour of sailing ships from eras long past. These vessels, once majestic symbols of exploration and adventure, are resurrected on screen under the watchful eye of marine coordinators. I had this idea about filmmaking... that the camera operator, through the act of filming, is not only capturing the external world but also carelessly documenting their own physical presence and movement within that space. This concept opens a rich area of exploration in both the art of cinema and the study of human interaction with the environment. In 1990 Jonas Mekas, with his camera in hand, captured an hour-long walk through Manhattan, offering a first-person view of the city as it was back then. Fast forward 33 years, I went to New York, retraced his exact route, and by filming everything in one take from the same perspectives and angles - I effectively mirrored his every move. It felt like engaging in a “dance” choreographed by Jonas Mekas. We became alone-in-a-crowd Flâneurs, detached from the city and its passersby. Which becomes a commentary on how the extraordinary can be hidden within the mundane. Throughout the whole process, I was overwhelmed by the feeling of intimacy — the camera became a medium through which I could experience someone’s vision, curiosity, and even subconscious inclinations. I felt depersonalized and for a moment grew to be someone else. I was someone that already happened before… Gilles Deleuze argued that repetition is not merely about replicating the same thing. While the setting and the choreography of the camera movements were repeated, the differences in time and personal perspective created a new and distinct piece of work. The physical route through Manhattan remains, but everything around it, including the societal and personal context, has evolved. The experiment which I called “5 Minutes Late” resulted in two synchronized videos: the left screen displaying my recent footage and the right screen showing Mekas's original film. Side by side, they present a fascinating comparison of the same streets, buildings, and urban scenes, separated by a 33-year time gap which turned into an urban study, where cities are seen as layers of history, each new generation adding to the narrative. As a thinking individual, I find that happiness is a matter of a certain order of things in life. We build the architecture of our lives. A lovely old video showed up on my Facebook memory... Doing a workshop on #changeleadership called 'TransFORM', using #experiential #artsbased approaches: #theatre and #painting. For me, at The Painted Sky over the last 17 years, I have learnt how marvellous and wonderful the human mind is, and how it is capable of extraordinary #innovation and #performance when connected to the heart. The ability to dream, imagine and envisage different realities, and believe in those realities to commit to them... In our #leadershipdevelopment programs using #arts, we create a non-threatening, non-competitive #safespace for what we call the 4 I's: 1) introspection - look inside to deal with the abstract, 2) interaction - share stories for context with partners, 3) ideation - brainstorm to diverge and converge, and 4) implementation - put it all together to express. At the end, each participant not just learns more about herself through these deep and different experiences, they are also moved by each other's and their own journeys to internalise and cement their learnings. Leading to spectacular impact. Over the years, along with my colleagues Smitha and Anirban, we have created 8 Painting-Based programs that drive towards outcomes as diverse as #emotionalintelligence to #influencingskills, #conflictmanagement to #dealingwithdisruption. And bring over 100 activities and tools from our deep experience in #organisationtheatre to move the mind and the body towards new discoveries.
