Are you “delulu” after all the festivities? Or is it all about what you “ate”? Or have you just got ‘brainrot’? NDTV says that Gen Z slang has dominated our entire year, even into the festive season. “Ate” is no longer about food or drink consumption. It’s now a slang term for someone who ‘did something exceptionally well or deserves praise.’ As for cuties, like babies, kittens, puppies and the like, they’re now ‘pookie.’ Some things don’t change. Apparently, women who justify their over-spending are doing ‘girl math.’ I hate that! And then there’s all that ‘doomscrolling’ where we search for and find (of course) all the online bad news. I dunno about all of this. Is it me, or are we all becoming delusional? Sorry. ‘Delulu’? Or maybe we just have ‘brainrot’ cos we’ve been exposed to too much, low level social media content. Whatever it is, I hope that you can spend the next few days in tranquil peace and relaxation, even as the new calendar year appears, and you’re bombarded with online and offline jargon, sales pitches, and demands for self-improvement. Anyway, here's one I made last time - the question has become entirely epistemological - what sources do you trust? You tend to trust in-group over out-group - who do you consider part of the your in-group? https://lnkd.in/dZZhEUT8 Humans get more tribal when they feel resources are scarce — they favor the in-group at the expense of out-groups. “Classic social psychological research demonstrates that it is very easy to pit groups against one another if they are competing for a scarce resource. Remember the television show Survivor? Therefore, one cause of racism may be an innate proclivity towards group conflict in the service of resource acquisition. Of course, this is extremely problematic and maladaptive in the modern interconnected and mobile world.” And ultimately, under the right circumstances, this can lead to civil unrest and conflict. This “extremely problematic and maladaptive” tendency has been manipulated by demagogues across the world, [especially when the seemingly scarce resources are all being grabbed by a one percent group], who are far more in tune with the true thoughts, feelings and behaviors of the overall population than journalists, pollsters, politicians or advertising agencies, who seem increasingly removed from it.

I don't typically talk politics on my platform...but, today, I want to give you something to ponder.  Today the voting booth might feel like a place of tension, with choices that carry weight and emotions that run high. Even when it’s challenging, voting is a powerful way to honor what matters to us and to our communities. If it feels overwhelming or difficult, take a deep breath and be gentle with yourself. Approach the process as an act of kindness—both toward yourself and others. The decisions may be tough, but they’re opportunities to choose what aligns with your heart and hopes. Be patient with yourself, and with those around you. The polling place might feel charged, but each person is there because they care deeply, just like you. Let today be a reminder of our collective effort toward a brighter future. No matter the outcome, know that your effort, your voice, and your kindness matter. Macy Gray's "Why didn't you call me again" popped into my iTunes randomly and it made me think: 1- The era of the song: 2000. 2-MTV, BET, VH1 back then. 3- "Waiting by the phone....." literally meant waiting by a phone you were stuck by. 4-Ghosting was not a term until 2010-ish? 5- How Merriam-Webster selects new words via Lexicographers. And then what did I do? I looked up a few more new words. Because this is a reflection on how our world is changing. How we as humans live differently. This is reflected in culture all around us, in marketing, in technology, in preservation, in consumption- in operating as a human in todays world Words 'retire', song lyrics differ, and we need to adapt best we can :) Here are some newer words/definitions in case you are curious, like me. Dumbphone- A cell phone without advanced software features Touch grass- to participate in normal activities in the real world For You page (or FYP) - a social media feed that contains personalized content Nepo baby- a person who gains success or opportunities through familial connections And. I found this article to be frustratingly light on strategy and tactics. In a week where many Americans are going to be engaging with family members who identify all along the political spectrum, what do we actually SAY if our goal is to preserve relationship and also have a productive dialogue about the things that matter most to us? Some real ideas to supplement the (vague) final idea of the piece: “We can’t always win... sometimes we need to learn to just back off gracefully.” How do we back off gracefully? Try: "I don't think we'll solve this today, but I appreciate your willingness to engage with me." "I don't agree with you, but I love you and I'm glad we can talk." "Thankfully we have other things to talk about. How are your kids/pets/favorite sports team doing?" The goal here is to 1) acknowledge that the difference remains (nothing is more frustrating than feeling like someone just isn't hearing you) 2) identify the shared connection (which remains, no matter what) 3) move the conversation forward (everyone hates an awkward silence!) How do you handle contentious conversations with loved ones?
