Are companies thinking of IPO in 2025? The one I started in 2014 is looking good at reaching this target! 👀 It all started off visiting a Farmers Market and thinking what if we could put this Cherry 🍒 Farm online and have people enjoy ordering through a website and having a pound of Organic Cherries 🍒 delivered to their doorsteps 24-48 hours after they were picked while coming direct from the Cherry 🍒 Farmer himself. (We would have to visit the farm and pick up the cherries 🍒 and then package them in small containers.) The first weekend we sold over 400 pounds of cherries thus validating that this could work for more Organic Farmers. The rest is history. I visited many Farmers Markets and spoke with the owners, managers, you name it, while getting as many Farms to come be a part of our website and see how fast we could get customers to adopt this new way of shopping online. GrubHub (alternative to paper menu's 2004, then in 2006 did restaurant deliveries and has raised $284M to date), Instacart (Alcohol delivery 2012 and has raised $2.9B to date), etc. were not into delivering groceries....yet! GrubMarket has evolved over the past 10 years and is now an AI-powered technology enabler and digital transformer of the American food supply chain industry. From the first at building B2B eCommerce, as well as the first mover of providing Enterprise AI Solutions to the American food supply chain industry. Who will be the next supply chain consolidator? From 2011 to 2021, XPO scaled up from $70M to $20B, fueled by a combination of organic growth and 18 acquisitions. The model was extremely successful. But the supply chain ecosystem remains extremely fragmented. There is plenty of room for new consolidators to emerge as winners. In the food supply chain software arena, one emerging acquiror is GrubMarket Inc. They have built a network model to help food suppliers automate their relationships with their customers. GrubMarket has acquired over 100 companies to date. They are expecting to exceed $2B in annualized revenue. And they just announced their latest purchase: Butter 🧈, a SaaS platform to automate food distribution. ReScale—a Boston-based startup led by ex-Trader Joe’s exec Julia Megson—has emerged from stealth after raising a $2.3m round led by Baukunst to address a major pain point for small and medium sized CPG brands: sourcing, negotiating, and managing external manufacturing partnerships. The funding round, supported by Dartmouth Angels and various CPG industry angel investors, will help Megson (CEO) and cofounder Matthew K. (CTO) further build out an online platform to help brands with under $100 million in revenue find a co-manufacturer “who can actually make your product,” says Megson. “But we also recognize that this is just the beginning. Brands then need help with contracting and then managing that relationship,” she adds. “Finding a contract manufacturer is still mostly done by word of mouth. About half of small- and mid-size food brands rely on white label manufacturers, but for each new item, they have to start from scratch. Tomorrow afternoon I’m interviewing Mathieu Jamet and Sean Miller cofounders of food and beverage distribution SaaS startup Preplocal. They are Skalata-backed, growing fast and taking advantage of multiple inefficiencies in the way distribution is currently done in the food and beverage industry. Those inefficiencies have never mattered much to the big brands and retailers, but they make distribution more expensive and harder for small brands and smaller retailers. Preplocal is also global-from-day-soon, with a platform and model very similar to US market disruptor Podfoods, suggesting this is an international problem to solve. Mathieu was head of digital and IT for Danone in APAC and Sean is a serial hospitality cofounder and both of them have the ‘hustle gene’ fully expressed. Call me old-fashioned, but unless there is absolutely no other way to order, I will always prefer talking to a human being. And I totally understand lowering costs and portioning correctly, but food chains have to understand that they are in the services industry, which means... well, serving people! The concept of 'gerocerants', akin to food halls within grocers is definitely interesting for busy people or simply customers looking for something freshly prepared and ready-to-eat.
