China is about to land on the far side of the moon with Chang'e 6 https://lnkd.in/dNU6FpHX Landing on the far side of the moon is rarely attempted, due to difficulties communicating with Earth, but China is about to try. If successful, its Chang'e 6 mission will then bring lunar samples back home

The Chinese Lunar Exploration Program is making steady progress, demonstrating China's emergence as the leading alternative to US-led space programs in the new space race. The Chinese effort seems more oriented towards preparing infrastructure for human occupation and economic development, and strategic goals. In contrast, some like Rick Tumlinson characterize the U.S. Moon to Mars plans as short term "camping trips". Contrast Chinese lunar successes with some of the competition: The recent lunar missions by the Japanese SLIM lander and the American Odysseus lander both tipped over upon landing. Both are at or near their end, since they weren't designed with radioisotope heaters to survive the long lunar night. In related news, China has moved on from their pioneering halo orbit for its 2018 lunar communications relay satellite, in favor of a more fuel-efficient frozen elliptical orbit in March, 2024. Also, a recent unannounced mission to the Moon failed to achieve lunar orbit. 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗻🚀⁣ ⁣ Japan has become the fifth country to land on the Moon. This milestone marks a before and after for Japan's space history, which managed to land on the #Moon for the first time in history.⁣ ⁣ The #SLIM mission has the objective of proving that its technology allows it to not only land safely on an extraterrestrial world, but to do so exactly where each mission requires it.⁣ ⁣ For Japan everything had been going very well until the problems began. Landing on the Moon is not easy, but neither is staying healthy. Initially, the telemetry said that the SLIM probe had landed on the satellite, but confirmation that everything had gone well was slow to arrive.⁣ ⁣ Minutes later, the JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency explained that it has communication with the ship, but the solar panels cannot generate power, probably because it is incorrectly oriented, which means that it would run out of energy to operate.⁣ ⁣ However, as JAXA officials explained during a press conference, “there is still hope” that when the angle of the sun changes, the panels generate electricity again.⁣ ⁣ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁! 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲.🤩

🌙 Happy International Moon Day! 20 July was declared as International Moon Day in 2021 by the UN General Assembly. It marks the anniversary of the first landing by humans on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission.
