Whittaker is 25 years old this year. I’ve been reflecting on just how far we’ve come. When I was 18, I wrote a business plan on a yellow legal pad of paper my mom had. The plan included a tax business. It shaped how I chose my major in college. After graduating, I worked my way up through KPMG to become a manager. I was 29, Shelley was 5 months pregnant with our first child and I knew it was time to leave the corporate world. So I took a leap of faith to start my own business. I didn’t know where the journey would take us. Now, 25 years later, we have a team of 14 people which includes my wife Shelley and my son Justin. We’re proud to serve 58 very successful businesses and families. It’s certainly been a journey. As any leader knows, there are times when it’s a battle and times when it’s smooth. No matter what, I’ve enjoyed the process. For me, it’s about growing a team that’s better today than they were yesterday. It’s about helping my clients' families create wealth. It’s about people. Ultimately, we’re a family serving families. We’re looking forward to celebrating this milestone as a team by visiting La Jolla for two days with our significant others. Year 6 About six years ago, Arun Shukla, Andrew Klemm, CPA, and I met, along with our significant others (Elise and I weren’t married yet) to discuss setting up our own firm- and how we wanted to do it differently. We asked our better halves for three things: 1) understanding that we may not be successful and have a gap in income, 2) it would be a fair amount of work, please help us! and 3) help us come up with a name. Fortunately, 1 has been held off for six years; 2 is a labor of love each day and week; and 3, we appreciated their input but then went with something less creative! Six years in, I get recharged every time we connect with our team. The past week, we hosted our semi-annual offsite. We try to rotate locations to where team members may be or key projects and clients are. This time was no exception. The offsite is where we go to sharpen our skills, learn from each other, and deepen our SLKone, LLC team bonds. We were fortunate to have two clients come visit us to speak and share their experiences and what they look for in advisors. Further, we were fortunate to have Dr. Sridhar Balasubramanian from UNC come and facilitate a number of learning sessions and workshops for us all. We cannot do this for our team and ourselves without our awesome clients, of course. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the time our team members commit to not just attending, but also helping develop content to share with the team. And finally, I have to give great thanks to our Business Manager, Isabella Siniscalchi Doval, who I consider my right hand in helping keep us running smoothly. Thank you to my team for a great offsite, a great past six years, and the many years ahead! #firmofthefuture #consulting
