Now available, Richard Tuck's Active and Passive Citizens is a powerful case for why majority rule—not representation—is the defining feature of democratic politics. The idea that democratic governance rests on active self-rule by citizens plays surprisingly little part in current theories of democracy, which instead stress the importance of representation by elected, appointed, or randomly selected bodies such as legislatures, courts, and juries. This would have astonished eighteenth-century theorists of democracy, who viewed universal suffrage and majoritarian voting as the sole criteria for democratic politics. Active and Passive Citizens defends the view of these earlier thinkers, asserting that individual agency is the very essence of democracy. Review: Who Is the Rural Voter? Book Builds on Old Themes to Create New Understanding. In their new book, The Rural Voter: The Politics of Place and the Disuniting of America, Colby College political scientists Nicholas F. Jacobs and Daniel M. Shea set out to describe what differentiates the politics of metropolitan and nonmetropolitan places. Drawing on the largest survey ever conducted with the specific aim of understanding rural voters, they seek to explain the recent rightward shift of the American countryside. While rural voters only make up around 15% of the... https://lnkd.in/day58BN5

The essence of democracy lies not just in the act of voting, but in how accurately and frequently the opinions of the majority are represented... The book Mathematical Theory of Democracy explores how representatives are selected to make decisions on behalf of society, focusing on the concept of representativeness. this is quantified through two key indices: the index of popularity, which measures the average percentage of the population whose opinions are reflected on various issues, and the index of universality, which tracks how often the opinion of the majority is represented. these indices are used to assess the performance of both individual leaders (like presidents) and collective bodies (such as parliaments, cabinets, or juries...). The book also proposes an election method that shifts away from traditional voting, instead indexing candidates according to how well they align with the electorate’s political profile. additionally, it extends its analysis to both societal and non-societal applications of these democratic principles.

ATTN: Do you live in the UK? The most important website of our times, Vote for Policies, has a new survey up. It's really quick and very accessible. It allows you to do a blind multiple-choice quiz to see where you stand on all issues relating to our democracy - the NHS, Education, Brexit, Tax, Economy, and more. It tells you the parties you're most closely aligned with and, importantly, drives home an appreciation that you are likely not 100% "one party". It can really surprise you what your own personal results breakdown is. In the 2019 general election, 43% of the UK public didn't vote. Even if you were part of the 57% who did, it's really important to actually understand and compare the policies (not vote for the personalities). Challenge yourself to be slightly more data-driven and informed about your vote, and have a bit of fun during the process! Take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/eUJGyzWp Please share far and wide with your UK friends/family/colleagues. Thank you

New in Publius: The Journal of Federalism. Robert McGrath reviews Steven Rogers' "Accountability in State Legislatures". As McGrath puts it, Rogers has written "the most comprehensive description and critical appraisal of dyadic electoral accountability in the states." The book is a "must-read for scholars of state politics and legislatures and provides an engaging juxtaposition with recent work on policy representation." Full review here: https://lnkd.in/gSTsD7nb

In this essay I explore the structural reasons our politics have become so divided and how we are in the beginning of what could be an historic electoral realignment. I speculate about the significant social, cultural, and political events that may have triggered the political upheaval we are experiencing. Please share if you find the analysis helpful.
