The United States is uniquely positioned to welcome forcibly displaced people from around the world, and the church is called to be the hands and feet of Jesus to refugees and asylum seekers. Excited to share another one of our Impact Funds! I have a lot of thoughts on this one... Immigration and refugee rights have long been causes I deeply care about. Some of my favorite college classes were global health courses taught by incredible professors who came to the states as refugees. I’ve had life-changing experiences working with organizations in the Bay Area to mentor immigrant and refugee students. And as an immigrant myself, I know what it means to seek and gain a sense of community and stability in a new world. We included this among our initial funds not only because it’s a topic I’m passionate about, but also because it’s an issue that many in our early donor community told us they also care about. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞: - California remains a top resettlement destination for refugees in the United States. - San Francisco is home to one of four courts which in total account for almost half of all asylum cases in the US. - The backlog of immigrant court cases has increased by almost 150% from 2016 through 2022. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: - When immigrants in need, refugees, or asylum seekers arrive in the Bay Area, they often come with few resources and face legal burdens and language barriers. - New immigration laws and executive orders create a lot of uncertainty, especially as power alternates between Democrats and Republicans. - Global conflicts, global health outbreaks, and climate change disproportionately affect the developing world, meaning we’re likely to see an increase in the amount of people fleeing from precarious situations. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐮𝐬: Academics and policy experts who’ve studied this issue recommend focusing on the following interventions at a high level: 1. Helping individuals navigate the legal system and other government/local services. 2. Helping individuals find paid work. 3. Providing immediate and critical goods (e.g., food) and services (e.g., case management and referrals. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐛’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: To align with research-based solutions, our fund supports nonprofits creating the following outputs: 1. 🧑⚖️ Legal services 2. 🤝 Supportive services (e.g. translation services) 3. 👦🏽 Youth programs 4. 🧺 Supportive goods (e.g. food and diapers) 5. 🎓 Education and employment programs When you subscribe to this fund, 100% of your monthly donation automatically gets allocated to the nonprofits in the fund based on our strategy. You’ll receive regular reports on where your money went and how many outputs it delivered. We’ll also send you updates and new research so you can better understand the impact you’re creating. 20th June is annually observed as World Refugee Day by the United Nations to raise awareness about the plight of refugees worldwide. A solemn reminder of the staggering 108+ million people (Source: UNHCR Global Trends 2022, 14 June 2023) who have been forcibly displaced worldwide due to conflict, persecution, and violence. As we observe this day, let's commit to taking action and making a positive difference in the lives of refugees. Whether through volunteering your time and skills, donating to reputable organisations supporting refugees, or simply spreading awareness about the challenges they face, every effort counts. Together, we can extend a helping hand to those who have been uprooted from their homes, offering them hope, dignity, and a chance to rebuild their lives. The Translationz team urges our network to use our resources and expertise to support refugee communities. Whether through volunteering, pro-bono services, or advocacy, our collective efforts can make a lasting impact. Additionally, we’d like to spread the word about the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) Telethon Auction (link in comments) to help raise vital funds for people seeking asylum. In 2021, Welcome.US was founded with one hypothesis: by mobilizing the private and civic sectors and empowering Americans to help resettle newcomers, we would find the national capacity—and the commitment—to welcome more people in need of refuge in ways that ensure they and their new communities would thrive together. Our hypothesis has proven true faster than we ever imagined. In just over two years, the United States has moved from a government system that welcomed just 11,400 refugees through the formal refugee resettlement system to an expansive public-private partnership that has welcomed nearly 500,000 refugee newcomers in safe, orderly ways in 11,000 zip codes across all 50 states. Welcome.US partners include Lions Clubs International and leaders like Mahesh Chitnis, Rotary International and leaders like Joyce Graff, over 240 veteran and faith groups, community, refugee and diaspora-led organizations. Private and civic sector partners have innovated on employment, housing, flights, and matching grants for sponsors—and those sponsors have contributed an estimated $7 billion of their own time and money to support newcomers arriving in the United States. This could include hosting cultural exchange events, supporting refugee-owned businesses, or simply being a friendly neighbour. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to a more inclusive and supportive world for refugees. "If [refugee claimants] get the help they need when they need it, many refugee claimants can be housed and working... bringing their talent and drive to our communities... [but Canada currently has] no national program, no official federal funding for services, no coordinated support, no plan... "A 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 would be to work with organizations serving claimants to develop a national plan that would support and 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. We can save money immediately by directing funds to 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. We can get more new arrivals stable and employed by making refugee claimants eligible for the services they need. 🏡 Home is where the heart is… RIGHT? But what if your heart is shattered and your new neighbours turn their backs? Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. The theme for the Refugee Week Festival this year is “Our Home.” https://lnkd.in/eGE8uvme Think about what home means to you. Home isn't just a physical space—it's a feeling. It’s a sense of community and belonging. For too many refugees, the journey to find a new home is fraught with challenges, heartache, and trauma. These journeys get increasingly perilous the longer time goes on. We know how treacherous the journey can be for refugees across the world— remember that’s not a life choice decision. So imagine the brutality they are trying to escape to even consider these horrific experiences. 🚨 The UN has cited that we are living in the WORST TIME IN HISTORY FOR HUMANITY: 120 million people have been forcibly displaced globally. This includes refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced people. ❗We need to be better global citizens; open our community doors and wrap our arms around this vulnerable population to help them create a new sense of home. ❤️ Home is not defined by walls but by the warmth, safety and acceptance we extend to one another. 🤟🏼 We need to create a healthier version of "Our Home" into reality, one small act of kindness at a time.
