I have spent the last five years understanding how wireless technology would change in the future, when the user devices will be in the radiative near-field of large antenna arrays. There are important prospects to use spatial multiplexing to serve more users simultaneously, since traditional beamforming turns into finite-depth beamfocusing. Yet, I have grown to understand that much of the fundamental limits and algorithms developed for far-field MIMO are still applicable for near-field MIMO. In this new video, I dispel three misconceptions that are spreading in the related literature. Along the way, I’m explaining some of the fundamental properties that underpin the MIMO technology. The research insights presented in the video were developed in collaboration with Luca Sanguinetti, Özlem Tuğfe Demir, Parisa Ramezani, Alva Kosasih, Amna Irshad, Giacomo Bacci, and others.
