𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗖𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗗𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗚𝗘𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗬 𝗡𝗢𝗡-𝗘𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 Excerpts: "If your next-door neighbor decided to start brewing beer in his garage, and the fermenting yeast made your house smell like rotten eggs, you could sue him for nuisance, enjoin him from making beer, and seek damages to repair the damage to your house." "That is a fair common law principle." "But what if the city you live in refuses to enforce anti-vagrancy laws, such as bans on camping, panhandling, or public urination? What if the resulting homelessness encampments increase crime in your neighborhood and result in your home smelling like urine?" "There is no cause of action in common law against a local government for not enforcing the law. If the mayor and district attorney decide not to enforce your city’s anti-vagrancy laws, and your home suffers as a result, your only recourse is the ballot box." "Some Arizonans want to change that." "The Arizona House passed a resolution this month that places an initiative on the November ballot that would enable real property owners to win tax refunds in state court if they could show a city’s decision not to enforce anti-vagrancy laws caused monetary damage to their property." "Not only should other states copy Arizona, but they should go even further. District attorneys should be financially accountable when criminals they choose either not to prosecute or to let out on parole go on to harm again." Full article: https://lnkd.in/e9tzPGsS

Here are a couple of things to note while in Honolulu: When you are thinking about the money you carry or using your credit card, note that US$1 = about SBD$8.00. So, a US$5 glass of beer (which is likely the most cheapest) is SBD40.00. Be careful with your budget.

I can understand that Mayor Gondek is “steamed over the recall petition drive to punt her.” I would be, too. However, she might want to consider these triggers for the widespread unhappiness: 1. A record property tax increase plus a perception that Mayor Gondek supports similar annual increases in the foreseeable future. 2. Rejection of all attempts to reduce expenditures to reduce the property tax increase. 3. A perception is that the balances in various city funds for specific purposes are excessive. 4. Concerns about coming cost increases for the Green Line LRT combined with a perception that the new line won’t improve transportation much. 5. Starting her term with a forecast for the cost to address climate change that was so far above any amount that citizens could find credible. 6. Prioritizing DEI goals over pocketbook issues Calgaryians are facing. 7. A sweeping rezoning proposal that is creating lots of uncertainty. 8. A perception that the city staffing level may be excessive for the size of the city creates opportunities to reduce operating costs that are not being explored. #calgary #gondek Bell: Mayor Gondek is really steamed over recall petition drive to punt her Rick Bell, Calgary Herald, March 21, 2024 https://lnkd.in/g7-JxZRY

Irresponsible economic management is a hallmark of Labor's government. This latest cash splash is a resounding example. A pathetic waste of taxpayers money #RogerCook How about fixing the hospital system, or actually funding more hospital beds? How about fixing aged care services? How about reducing taxes and the administrative burden on small businesses? How about advocating for farmers and the agricultural industry? How about showing up to do what's best for the State and the people of Western Australia instead of acting like a Year 6 kid trying to win class president and buying votes? #voteanyoneBUTLabor https://lnkd.in/gUvTRkR9

Breaking News: Even the Pets Aren’t Safe Anymore! 🐕🐈 "In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of the people that live there,” – Yes, you read that right. 😳 And no, this isn’t a late-night comedy skit; it’s a real quote. While I’m not sure if our furry friends are in real danger, one thing’s certain: The government is more than happy to gobble up your hard-earned money if you’re not paying attention. EXTRA:The latest PPIC poll shows Prop 33 failing (54% No and 42%) and Prop 34 trailing (47% Yes and 49% No) . This polling update highlights the dynamic nature of California’s policy landscape. With Prop 33 trailing significantly and Prop 34 in a tight race, it's clear that the campaigns are gaining traction—but there’s still a crucial push needed to secure Prop 34’s passage. A win here isn’t just about current policy; it could help avoid the threat of future attempts to repeal Costa-Hawkins, such as a possible comeback from Weinstein in 2026-2028. This is the time for those invested in California’s property future to contribute to the CAA Issues Committee, as the results reflect just how fast campaign fortunes can pivot in California politics. https://lnkd.in/gk3nvDv5 As more apartments are built and homeownership declines, renter support for strict rent control grows, while homeowners largely oppose it. This shift makes advocacy, like contributions to the CAA Issues Committee, essential to shaping the future of California’s housing policies.

A bill introduced in the #California #Assembly, #AB1990 or the STOP Act aims to combat organized #retailcrime by allowing peace officers to make warrantless arrests for misdemeanor #shoplifting offenses based on probable cause. Key points include: 1. The bill is authored by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, who cites the escalation of organized #retailtheft as a threat to businesses, the state's #economy, and #publicsafety. 2. AB 1990 would amend Section 836 of the Penal Code to permit warrantless arrests for shoplifting violations not committed in the officer's presence, based on probable cause and a sworn statement from a witness. 3. The bill passed the Assembly with a vote of 44-1, with 35 lawmakers not casting a vote, including 32 Democrats and the Assembly speaker. 4. Progressive Democrats were uncomfortable with the bill, fearing it could lead to increased harassment and incarceration of people of color for minor offenses. 5. Assemblymember Ash Kalra was the only legislator to vote "no," while others, like Assemblymember Tina Mckinnor, spoke against the bill but did not vote. 6. The article argues that not voting on controversial bills may be detrimental to lawmakers' political interests, as it can be seen as failing to represent constituents. The summary highlights the key provisions of AB 1990, the concerns surrounding its potential impact, and the voting behavior of California lawmakers on this controversial bill.
