Barriers of care for LGBTQIA+ Patients - improper identification - dismissiveness of gender identity - discrimination in treatment options To address these—and other—issues, leaders at healthcare facilities must actively promote inclusivity. AORN Journal had an open and honest discussion with Megan McDougle, BSN, RN, director of nursing at the San Francisco Surgery Center about this patient community and how health care facilities can provide better care and why it’s important. AORN Journal: Why is it important to have a safe, caring ASC environment for patients who identify as LGBTQIA+? McDougle: These patients may have experienced stigma or discrimination in previous encounters in the health care system that made them feel judged, shamed, or embarrassed. When patients feel that way, they may not share pertinent details of their medical history. It's our job to put patients at ease and make them feel comfortable and safe in our care.
