Is your patient's heart skipping a beat? It might not be love - it could be sleep apnea. 🚨 Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is present in up to 49% of Atrial Fibrillation patients. This hidden link is a game-changer for dental sleep professionals. Did you know: Patients with severe OSA are nearly 5 times more likely to develop Atrial Fibrillation. CPAP therapy can reduce AF recurrence risk by almost 50%. This week's More Than Teeth🦷 newsletter dives deep into the OSA-AF connection. The team from Antwerp University Hospital (#UZA) recently published a study titled "Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation Therapy in a Belgian Cohort of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients" examines the efficacy of HGNS and provides valuable insights and shows significant improvements in both objective and subjective patient outcomes for Belgian patients. High levels of patient satisfaction and therapy adherence were observed and 92% of patients would choose HGNS therapy again and recommend it to others. FU assessments were conducted at 6 and 12 months post-implantation. Results at 6 Months FU: - AHI significantly decreased from 33.8 to 10.2 events per hour. - 80% of patients met the Sher20 criteria for surgical success. - ESS improved from 12.0 to 6.0. - Average therapy usage was 7.4 hours per night. Results were confirmed at 12 Months FU: - Median AHI further decreased to 9.6 events per hour. - 76% of patients met the Sher20 criteria for surgical success. - ESS scores improved to 6.5. - Average therapy usage remained high at 7.0 hours per night. - Mean disease alleviation (MDA) was 58%. #UZA #sleep #OSA #Inspire #Belgium Source:

Transforming snorers and sleep apnea sufferers into high performers✨, using an innovative approach that turns restless nights into restorative sleep✨. Harmony in the bedroom, Unstoppable in the office.
The EPAP technology is backed by sound physiological principles and reliable clinical data. There is strong evidence that EPAP masks are effective for treatment of snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Essentially, EPAP masks function like CPAP with a low-pressure range. The EPAP masks have been used successfully and effectively by many users without difficulties with some exceptions. This is not surprising; CPAP therapy has been in use for more than 30 years and continue to receive some negative reviews. It is likely that patients who experience difficulty with the EPAP mask, are likely to experience difficulty with CPAP. One reason why some people have difficulty with the EPAP mask is due to the high resistance, causing the user to give up. The Optipillows EPAP mask is a prescription free EPAP mask that has an adjustable expiratory resistance. The resistance can be set on high for more effectiveness, or on low for easy acclimation. The Optipillows EPAP mask is prescription free and generates pressure equal or more than other EPAP masks that require a prescription. Remember, any EPAP mask is like a low-level CPAP, but much more convenient and less expensive. 😴 😴 😴

While multiple factors contribute to the development of OSA, reduced tongue muscle endurance stands out as a significant symptom exacerbating the condition. The tongue is one of the muscles that maintain airway patency during sleep by supporting the soft tissues of the throat. However, in individuals with OSA, the tongue muscles weaken over time, leading to increased collapse of the upper airway during sleep. This collapse results in episodes of apnea or hypopnea, where breathing temporarily stops or becomes shallow. Common causes contributing to reduced tongue muscle endurance in OSA patients include the following: Obesity, anatomical abnormalities, such as enlarged tonsils or a narrow airway, aging, and lifestyle factors like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. Some really interesting work out of Dublin looking at the impact of CPAP and weight loss on cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and endothelial function. These data suggest that CPAP therapy, but not GLP1-mediated weight-loss regimen (liraglutide [Lir]), improves vascular inflammation and reduces unstable plaque volume in patients with OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea). Further large randomized controlled studies are warranted to assess the benefit of CPAP therapy in modifying early CV disease. Read full article below: #cardiovascularhealth #CPAP #sleepapnea

Snoring It's often associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Thankfully, technological advances, such as tongue stimulation, have led to treatments that are providing relief! Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent in approximately 33% of American adults aged 30-69 years, with 55% of those cases falling within the mild range. It's often associated with habitual snoring, poor quality of life, and a significant increase in the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic disease. Until now, treatment options have included positive airway pressure (PAP), oral appliances, and hypoglossal nerve stimulation, which only treated the disease while the subject was asleep. However, those using PAP did show improvements in sleepiness, functional status, cognitive function, and blood pressure when used for more than 5.5 hours per night. Surgery on the upper airway was rare. One of the problems with these treatment devices is getting people to use them. Adherence to medical recommendations is low, with studies showing that 50% of PAP patients use it fewer than 4 hours a night.
