To truly talk about women and leadership, you have to take a step back and start at the very beginning.
I absolutely loved my conversation with Jayne Taylor, Chief Executive of The Elephant Group, on this month's Leading Lights podcast. Jayne’s honest and open reflections (or as she calls them, 'giving away her life secrets') about the moments that shaped her journey are nothing short of inspiring—and her advice is pure gold!
We covered so much ground, from her childhood and the impact of her brother’s leukemia diagnosis, to navigating parenthood and having children young, to slaying academic demons by pursuing a master’s degree later in life (during a pandemic, no less). Jayne also shared what she’s learned from playing roller derby—yes, falling on your face can be a good thing if you learn from it—and her love for obsessively reading mountaineering books.
On top of that, I got an insider’s look at what it really means to be a Chief Executive and the importance of being unapologetically yourself in leadership.
There are so many gems in this episode, but let me tease you with a couple of my favourite moments…
💕
'And you think that distinction helped secure the role of chief exec?'
'I don’t think it had anything to do with it. I think it just gave me the confidence to know I could do stuff.
I can do things. I can, I can achieve things.
I can set my mind to something, and do it.
And, you know, I can bring to bear all these skills and all these, this, you know, this ability and do something.
And I don't think I really felt like that for a long time.'
💕
'I think we've all got demons. And I think being a chief exec exposes fault lines in you as a human being. And I spend a lot of time thinking about those fault lines because I need to make sure that they don't become big crevasses.'
Have a listen, hope you enjoy, then go find your mountaineering book!
