Urban Greening, Nature positive solutions and biodiversity net gain are vital ingredients for a nature enabled infrastructure and improved storm water management. Spongy infrastructure, green roofs and revitalizing the external spaces / private public spaces is a prudent approach for championing climate resilient infrastructure. Coherent and consistent integration of the green elements for stepping up retention and storm water system capacities is essential. Let’s embark on a co-adventure into the eyesome green spaces for catering to the wider community needs and several other advantages on the offer. This facilitates better environment and climate adaptative design. #StantecDPG

Sustainability and community development professional with extensive natural resource management experience
Happy World Environment Day! 🌍 This year’s theme focuses on land restoration—a practice that will be vital to helping many communities adapt to the impacts from climate change. Helping sustain existing natural resources is one of most efficient strategies but where lands are degraded, restoration holds great potential. Watch this one minute video to learn more and see how people around the globe are celebrating today and everyday.

“Our land. Our future.” On this World Environment Day, the focus is on Land Restoration. According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050. Did you know? 🕦 Every five seconds, the equivalent of one football pitch of soil is eroded. Yet, it takes 1,000 years to generate 3 centimeters of topsoil. 🌳 Trees in urban areas can cool the air by up to 5°C, reducing air conditioning needs by 25 per cent. 🐢 Lakes, rivers and wetlands hold 20–30 percent of global carbon despite occupying only 5–8 per cent of its land surface. Check out our climate solutions library to learn more about what is being done to combat climate change: https://lnkd.in/gQaNwpH Image description: A lagoon with grassy islets in a nature preserve, once farmland, along the Gulf Coast of southwest Florida. 💧 Happy #WorldWaterDay! As we celebrate this awareness day, we highlight the importance of wetlands. These waterlogged areas have unique characteristics that make them a great nature-based solution for climate change. A key aim of WET HORIZONS is to spread awareness about wetland restoration and its potential impacts and benefits. Preservationists in the Tribal sector talk, think, and worry about the effects of climate change on cultural and historic sites every day. This is especially true for Virginia Indian communities, where sea level rise (and sometimes the attempts to mitigate those rising tides) are actively threatening fragile riverine landscapes. I am so happy to read Sara C. Bronin's recommendation for a climate heritage office- there is an urgent need for further research, planning, and action to protect historic resources before they are gone!

As focus on the climate crisis increases, and the understanding of how hedgerows as habitats can help mitigate against the impact of climate change becomes greater, we hope that more people will come to appreciate the enormous value of hedgerows to our natural world and join us in taking steps to protect them for generations to come. By supporting our work with a regular gift from just £5 a month, you can help preserve the past and protect the future. Planted mangrove forests can sequester 75% of the carbon of intact stands within 20 to 40 years. This is the result of a study with contributions from ZMT’s Tim Jennerjahn. The study had just been published in the renowned journal #ScienceAdvances. The comprehensive analysis by an international team of researchers, led by the USDA Forest Service provides new insights into the potential of mangrove restoration for climate protection. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/egy6qJwX 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gpF6Qrta #mangroves #carbonstocks #bluecarbon #climatechange #restoration

First constructed in 1832, the Low Point Lighthouse has helped thousands of ships navigate Cape Breton’s east coast, and the mouth of Sydney Harbour. Attempts to protect the site with a sea wall and arbourstone have all failed and if significant efforts aren’t made soon, this treasure will be on the bottom of the Atlantic. My best guess is about 50 ft of land between this lighthouse and a fast eroding bank. Another reality of the impacts of climate change on the East Coast.
