#WorldSparrowDay: Celebrated on 20th March each year. When was the last time you saw a sparrow near your dwelling? #PlanetB #PlanetEarth #EarthHourIndia House sparrows have a long history of association with humans. They are fascinating birds with a remarkable ability to adapt to a wide range of environments, making them one of the most familiar and widespread bird species worldwide. While house sparrows were abundant in many areas till recently, their populations have declined drastically in some regions. #Birds #Sparrows #WorldSparrowDay #SparrowAwareness #Nature #SaveOurSparrows #BiodiversityConservation #UrbanWildlife #BirdWatching #NatureEducation #WildlifeProtection #GenZAndNature #SparrowHabitat #UrbanBiodiversity #BirdConservation #SparrowLove #CommunityConservation #NatureAppreciation

The Guardian article below is another reason why conferring #personhood on the #whale, a worldwide call by the #Māori people, is the only way to stop the madness of the “ might is right” doctrine. This disease has afflicted our humanity and with horrendous consequences for our #planet, our #climate, and for our own existence. May I suggest that as we rush to get booster shots for #Covid and the flu, we also get an urgent #Empathy booster shot. Immediately, we would wake up from our nightmare, most of our self-inflicted problems would vanish away, and we would become kinder to one another and to our wondrous planet and its nonhuman inhabitants. We have conferred personhood on companies, why not confer it on one of the greatest gift givers of all: the whale. Please help us to protect them by signing and sharing the petition to confer #personhood on the whales, and to declare them the #OceanAmbassador to the UN: https://chng.it/NhgfkdGVyF

For people unaccustomed to identifying birds, it is individuals in juvenile plumage that often prove confusing. This is a closeup photo that I took of a red-tailed hawk, one of the most common #raptors in North America. This #bird has a light overall coloring compared to many in this #species. As any #birder can testify, red tails vary in plumage from dark chocolate brown all over to the pale Krider's subspecies that look sugar-coated. There are size variances too, as females tend to be larger among #hawks. Many times the coloration of #birds is related to clinal conditions (latitude) with northern species larger and darker (for dealing with colder temps) and southern or desert species appearing smaller and paler (for temperature control.) These variations occur through #evolution and are expressed across many #avian groups. It's all about who is best adapted to local #environmental and #climate conditions. When seasons change, #migration takes birds to places where food is still available.

Endangered migrating eagles impacted by Ukraine war, finds UEA's Charlie Russell 🦅 "The war in Ukraine has had a devastating impact on people and the environment. Our findings provide a rare window into how conflicts affect wildlife." "Migratory birds such as Greater Spotted Eagles are drastically declining all over the world and it’s imperative that we better understand and mitigate our effects on these charismatic species." The team found the birds flew further and less directly to breeding grounds, travelling an extra 85km on average. Migrations also took longer: 246 hours compared to 193 pre-conflict for females, and 181 hours compared to 125 pre-conflict for males. Males also travelled more slowly than in the years before the war. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDNVsUmg 📸 Hari K Patibanda #UkraineWar #Ukraine #Conflict #Conservation #EndangeredSpecies

Most parts of India have a high degree of tolerance to wild animals in their vicinity. Unfortunately, sensationalized reporting of human-wildlife conflict in popular media, and knee-jerk reaction by most forest departments of the country has chipped away at this tolerance slowly, but surely. The consequence of this on the #ecology, #socioeconomics, and #mentalhealth of those affected, including the #firstresponders, remains largely unknown. Capturing a healthy animal and moving it to captivity, or relocating it, is not #rescue.
📰🙌🏻 In today's Hindu Edit page: Is Capture🟰Rescue? Given the rising instances of human-wildlife conflict, Anisha Iyer pens a strong piece on the rescue paradox in India that navigates the fine line between wildlife 'capture' and 'rescue' Full piece here: https://lnkd.in/dDdp8zjD
