Sound transference (STC) plays a major role in how we design and build workspaces, and there are many factors to consider when minimizing STC during the construction process. Sometimes this involves the type of doors used, whether the walls are full height, and what the overall condition is of the plenum and HAVC systems - so proactive planning is key. Additionally, there are a couple of ways to minimize STC post-construction. This can be done by applying what is called “acoustic paneling” door and wall surfaces, as well as installing sound absorptive seals on the jambs or the bottom of the door. Did you know that sound can travel faster in warmer air? 🌡️ While sound moves at about 340 metres per second in cool air (at 0°C), it can travel as fast as 370 metres per second in warmer air (at 30°C)! Workspace design is crucial for inspiring creativity and boosting productivity. When tackling client projects, we not only address artificial lighting and controls, but also consider essential elements like daylight, biophilia, acoustics, ergonomics, and various other aspects that might affect the final proposal of our chosen luminaries and systems. I would like to believe that the above requirements are no longer just buzzwords but becoming industry standards when creating commercial spaces, but it would be interesting to hear other opinions and if you still encounter reluctance from the client side?
