Lots of people looking for work and lots of complaining here on LI about the tough job market. I’ve run three searches for a client in the past two months. Here’s why you aren’t getting hired: 1) You think clicking-to-apply = job search 😂 2) You are not even remotely qualified for the role you are applying for. 3) If you happen to be qualified, your LI profile is filled with buzzwords and does not indicate in any way what you actually do. 4) You do not connect with or reach out to the person responsible for the listing (see # 3 above). 5) If you do reach out, your message is generic. With one simple (properly formatted) message, the candidate below caught my attention.

Reapplying to a company you didn't get hired by before? It's definitely possible. But timing is key. In fact, I've seen many candidates get offers from the same company they previously "failed" at. Here's what you need to know: • Timing matters: Companies typically have a 12-24 month threshold before reconsidering past applicants. (don’t try after 6 months, your skills likely haven’t dramatically changed) • Late-stage advantage: Companies are more likely to give a second chance if you reached the late stages of the process previously. • Showcase growth: Highlight any new skills, experiences, or achievements since your last application. • Be strategic: Time your reapplication carefully, giving yourself ample prep time. The bottom line? Don't get discouraged. With the right approach, reapplying can pay off. Just be mindful of industry norms and be strategic. P.S. Always let your recruiter know about your previous applications - duplications can look bad for both parties.

__ what if __ instead of applying to 50 jobs online you sent personalized messages to 50 people you Knew, Know, and Want to Know __ + what if __ when you did that you were able to actually reconnect with 25 of those people in the DMs, on the phone, or zoom __ + what if __ you made 1 hour per day to do these catch-ups and you caught up on family, life, and work... and you're reminded of what they're all about and what bonded you in the first place __ + what if __ you suddenly think of something or someone you know that might help them out. A friend they should meet, a book you read, the website that helped you pick paint colors. __ + what if __ it feels good to reconnect with them. dare I say it -- fun even momentarily freeing your mind from the job application doom scroll that is getting you absolutely nowhere __ + what if __ you start to feel thankful you did this grateful for their time their connection bc they care __ BUT what if __ the conversation naturally turns back to you and they ask you what you're up to now and you tell them about your life and family and the part where you're now looking for work __ what if __ you tell them specifically what it is you're looking for and that you're excited to find that thing but want to make the right choice and you ask their thoughts __ + what if __ they mention they have a friend over at that company in that industry that part of the country __ or what if __ they wish, but they don't know someone but they're rooting for you anyways and they want to keep in touch regardless __ + what if __ suddenly they say "oh, waiiiiit you know what?" and they think of 2 people you could chat with or maybe -- you ASK them if they know 2 others you could chat with (love this move Virginia Franco) to get an idea of what that company or industry, or specialty -- is really like. and they'd totally chat with you to share what's really going on there so you thank them and then you do it __ + what if __ that leads to more opportunities more confidence and support more peace and productivity than applying online ever did __ what if __ __________________________ I wrote this post in <4 minutes Because I know this story SO well bc it happens all the time it's what I "coach" but really -- it's what you're WIRED to do. _________________________ less than 4 minutes I only went back to fix a few typos and add the design-ey "__ + what if __" piece This is so familiar to me and to my clients, it flows like water. I'm grateful for the convenience of online applying, especially during these times when saving on gas and time is crucial. However, it's disheartening how the process can often lead to silent rejections without any real communication. For those outside the digital information/tech field, online applications may not showcase important qualities like professionalism and presence. The lack of face-to-face interactions makes it challenging to truly convey one's suitability for a role. The shift towards online applying has transformed the hiring process, making it harder to establish meaningful connections with potential employers. Personally, I believe in the value of face-to-face interactions and the insights they provide during the hiring process. What's your unique power that no one else has? 💪 Identify your UVP and make it clear. "What motivated you apply for this role?" - I need a job and the description looks like a good fit for my skillset. "What makes you uniquely qualified to be successful in this position?" - I need a job and the description looks like a good fit for my skillset. "Why should we consider you for this role?" - I need a job and the description looks like a good fit for my skillset. "Dance like a circus monkey and if we like your video, we might* follow up with you about this role"... Submitting the application is just the introduction. I don't mind explaining what makes me tick, or why the role looks interesting... once someone representing your company has verbally explained the role to me and I know a real human is reading my responses, then asking those types of questions makes sense. I understand companies receive numerous applicants for a single role, but honestly, most of us are applying for a role because we are looking for work and the description seems like what we are looking for. Just as you would not hire someone simply based on their resume alone, please stop asking questions that require applicants to come up with a justification why they are applying.
