Planning permission for the sustainable redevelopment of CAFRE - College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise Greenmount Campus was granted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council last month. Adaptive reuse and low carbon design strategies have led to the project receiving 6 Green Stars for Design and the most points awarded to any building from the NZGBC to date, categorising it as ‘world-leading’. The project’s success serves as a testament to the benefit of re-evaluating the latent value and design potential in existing buildings that may once have been deemed no longer fit for purpose. We’re delighted to share that our proposals for the next phase of PBSA at Nottingham’s The Island Quarter have been approved by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee! 🎉 In collaboration with The Conygar Investment Company, DAY has designed a scheme featuring 394 student spaces across four interconnected blocks. The development will feature premium amenities including a gym, lounges, and social areas. The plans also include commitments to sustainability and community enhancement, such as leveraging Nottingham’s district heating network, contributing to affordable housing, and enhancing the shared spaces. We are delighted that the Delivering Net Zero Study has been shortlisted for the 'Award for planning to address climate change' category in the Planning Awards 2024. 18 London boroughs came together, led by Haringey Council, with a shared ambition to deliver Net Zero Carbon development through strengthened #planning policy. This study highlights the power of #collaboration across a multidisciplinary team, led by energy specialists, Etude, and including: engineers (Introba), cost consultants (Currie & Brown), building physicists (Inkling LLP) and Levitt Bernstein as architects and #sustainability specialists.   Two planning policy options were presented, underpinned by comprehensive energy and construction cost modelling on four residential typologies, an office, industrial, school, and hotel building across 24 different fabric and system scenarios each. As part of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) conference, we held a panel discussion in our London office that posed the question “Redefining obsolescence in the built environment – opportunity or challenge?”  Chaired by Buro Happold’s UK Market Leader/Partner, Emily McDonald, our external panel included Nick Brindley, Partner at Gerald Eve, Leanne Tritton, Co-Founder of Don’t Waste Buildings, Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Derwent London, Kerstin Kane, Principal Planning Officer of City of London and Joe Morris, Founding Director of Morris+Company. The evening provided an opportunity to reconsider how we perceive and manage the lifecycle of our built environment. As buildings age and new technologies emerge, we ask ourselves: Can we transform the inevitability of obsolescence into a catalyst for innovation and sustainable growth? Does redefining what constitutes an obsolete building open new avenues for adaptive reuse, energy efficiency, and urban revitalization? Or does it present significant challenges that complicate our efforts to maintain and upgrade the infrastructure of our built environment?       Overall, there was optimism and enthusiasm for the future.
