Craig's challenge, spanning 780 miles in just 26 days, carries profound significance. It mirrors the 78 days it took for Craig and his family to receive a devastating cancer diagnosis. Yet, in a poignant twist, these 26 days now symbolize the swift diagnosis made possible by the QuicDNA Project, funded by the Maxwell Family Genomics Fund. Craig's inspiring journey, driven by resilience and hope, serves as a beacon for us all. At the age of 40, Craig was diagnosed with a rare form of genetic lung cancer, EGFR+, which had metastasized to his bones, rendering it inoperable and incurable. Instead of succumbing to fear, Craig, alongside his wife Tracey and their children Isla and Zach, has chosen to embrace every moment. Together, they're raising crucial funds to enhance cancer diagnosis pathways in Wales, ensuring swifter treatments and brighter futures for patients. Last year, I had the privilege of cycling alongside my newfound hero from Paris to Bordeaux. Witnessing his unwavering determination and selflessness firsthand was profoundly moving. Craig's storytelling, which moved a room full of adults, including myself, underscored the stark reality that cancer affects us all—whether as a parent, a child, or a cherished family member. #NationalBreastCancerAwarenessMonth Breast cancer is a reality for 1 in 8 women in the U.S., making it the most common cancer among women worldwide, according to a 2023 report by the American Cancer Society. A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. every two minutes. As you read this, someone is hearing their results and starting their cancer journey. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. But there's hope on the horizon. Over the last decade, we've seen a 7% decrease in breast cancer mortality rates due to early detection and treatment advances. These are not just numbers. They represent our mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends. As leaders in the financial sector, we are uniquely positioned to contribute. The 2024 Bahamas Hope Challenge is just over 8 weeks away! Many here participate, while many others are supporters. To both we say thank you!! We've been described as the best organized, most fun charitable event in the country. Those accolades certainly make us happy. But, the top reason we gather is to build hope and resources for Bahamians and their fight against cancer. The very diagnosis of cancer brings fear and uncertainty for anyone. But for the many uninsured Bahamians, that fear and uncertainty goes to extreme depths when faced with cancer. How will they pay for treatment? How will they pay for diagnostic imaging? How to fight, without putting the entire family in dire financial stress? Our Treatment Assistance Fund bridges these gaps. When you fundraise you are providing direct assistance to cancer patients in need. Breast Cancer, when detected early, is beatable. Late stage diagnosis makes beating this prevalent cancer much more difficult. Throughout our country, in the Family Islands in particular, lack of access to diagnostic imaging hampers self care. When you fundraise, you are building our capacity to bring more women to New Providence for mammograms. This reduces the likelihood of late stage diagnosis and increases survivorship! Curing cancer may seem like an insurmountable goal, but that isn't stopping me from doing my part to help researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center do just that. How? 🌟 I'm raising funds and joining hundreds of other riders, survivors, families and friends this October as part of CUIMC's Velocity Ride to end cancer. Why am I riding? 🌟 My cousin, Dr. Andrij Hruszkewycz, passionately believed in finding a cure for cancer. He worked tirelessly toward this goal until he unexpectedly passed away in 2018. 🌟 My mother, Barbara Tymkiw, fought hard but she lost her battle with colon cancer in 1988. (With all the advances since then, I believe she may have survived if she were diagnosed today) 💡 More than 2 million new cancer cases are projected to be diagnosed in the United States this year, according to the American Cancer Society. 👉 I'm convinced that we can turn the tide by joining together to help researchers and doctors develop cutting edge treatments and cures. 🏆 Over the next two weeks, watch us highlight “Champions of EHE.” These people impact our mission by advocating for EHE and inspiring and empowering those affected by this rare cancer. One such Champion is Rick Harrington. “When I was first diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago, I was very fearful of the unknown. Rare cancers have additional difficulties besides the cancer diagnosis. EHE research continues to progress thanks to The EHE Foundation. Like many rare cancers, there is no standard treatment, which also makes it challenging to receive treatment approval from an insurance provider. EHE presents itself in so many ways. I have an aggressive form of EHE and am grateful for the availability of clinical trials. I may be on my third trial, but I still have hope!  I have an oncologist experienced with EHE that regards my situation and has options through these trials, which is priceless,” said Rick Harrington. IMPORTANT- PLEASE READ! Here I am at the Pink Tie 10th Birthday Ball on July 12th to celebrate the Trust turning 10 and my 11 years since being told I had cancer. What you don’t know about this day was it started with a stereo core biopsy on my “good” boob as my yearly mammogram had highlighted an area of concern. Fast forward 10 days (and a quick trip away with this hanging over me) and I’ve been diagnosed once again with triple negative breast cancer. It’s exactly the same diagnosis as 11 years ago, except in the other breast and the lump is so small none of us can feel it! The chances of this happening again when you’re told you don’t have the brca gene is 3% and why I and my surgical team opted not to do anything with this breast expect early mammograms! (Getting genetics involved again as this is rare)!!! As you know I’m undertaking 10 challenges for the Trust turning 10. I’m still walking a mile every day, I’ve climbed mountains, and now this cancer diagnosis is challenges 6,7,8,9 & 10. You’ve no chance of me giving up chocolate in Aug after this shitty news! I’ve decided to go public to help the Trust, you know me, I can turn anything into a fundraising opportunity, so here I am turning my cancer into fundraising for the Trust. I will undergo an operation and will be having chemotherapy and so I need to raise as much as I can now. I need to raise money to purchase a Mac book which will mirror my office Mac so I can continue to work throughout, esp at hospital. Anything I raise over the Mac book amount will go to the kids we support for their activities and resources for the support packs. I am riding again in the Maca 200 Ride for Cancer to raise money for cancer research conducted by the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. Another 200kms this October for me. I was never much of a rider. Still am not. But I have learnt to appreciate it in a lot of ways. Can't say it comes naturally or easy to me. Someone close to me asked me why I do this (After seeing some of the stress associated with organising fundraising events). Fair question. Organising events is stressful. training is time consuming. But there are so many reasons I have been raising money for cancer research via the MACA 200 for 5 years and am likely to continue doing for years to come. The obvious reason, is to find better detection and treatment to make cancers non lethal. I have personally seen someone lose their 7 year old grand daughter and my heart breaks every time I think of them and their family. My children are only 3 and 5 and it hits. HARD. I have seen friends go through grueling treatments, followed by fearful periods of isolation and quarantine. I have seen many friends have to battle the mental aspects that go with being diagnosed and coming out the other end. It is not as easy as "I am so lucky" let's get on with our lives and pick up where we left off. I have friends who work in the industry, conducting seeming endless trials. They work SO. HARD. Day. And Night. There are countless friends and people I know who are living with a diagnosis constantly having to navigate the side effects of treatment and calculating and weighing up prognostic risks and projected outcomes. I also do it because I don't want to be a passive bystander. I want to empower myself and those around me to help where they can. What I can do is organise events well. Bring people together. So that's what I do. I organise fundraising events every year. I feel privileged to do it because the amount of people that get around me and my fundraising is humbling, connecting and endlessly generous. Businesses who donate their services and products, people who donate, people who come along and participate in events, raffles, partnerships. The power of our community is incredible.
