People with advanced frailty should not be collecting in, sorted, or housed in acute care. We need their presence and resilience as part of every community. It's time to integrate a palliative approach as part of our last chapters of living. 1) It's time to ask the actual experts; those living with frailty. 2) As frailty runs its NATURAL course, INCLUDE, ACCEPT and TRUST each of us to make decisions about our lives. This allows both improved QUALITY and QUANTITY to life. 3) Ask each other early. Talk about what it means to LIVE until we die. Hear each other deeply. Learn from and with each other. Prepare to be surprised in the best possible way! What is missing here that we need from our leaders for healthier, inclusive frailty friendly communities? I think all too often, we get wrapped up in the work and in being professional and focusing on what needs to get done. Sometimes we forget that we’re all human - that we have lives and families and challenges and hobbies and happiness and sadness outside of work. Some of the greatest leaders I’ve ever had though, realized that. They cared about ME - not just about work me. I had to take off last minute on Friday due to a personal emergency with my sweet boy, Champ. Champ is 12.5 years old and has been with me since before my husband and I got married. He’s been with us through every PCS, every new duty station, and by my side through every deployment. Champ isn’t doing so well. After three nights of vet visits and a six hour round trip drive to Rome on Friday for an emergency visit to neurosurgery, I’m physically and emotionally exhausted. And you know what? My leadership has been thoughtful, caring, kind, and genuinely concerned for me and my family. The work came second. What mattered most was ME and giving me the support to take care of what’s most important - my family. We still aren’t out of the clear with Champ, and we have a lot of tough decisions ahead of us, but I’m grateful for leadership, friends, and family by our side, supporting us as human beings and letting the work come second. Life is too short. While work is important, your PEOPLE are even more important.
