These are hilarious. What mistakes have you made at work? I can think of a few.. not made by me though. 😆 1. A former CD didn’t realize the client hadn’t hung up on a conference call and called her a nasty name. It started with C. He was fired. 2. When looking for avails in my former President’s calendar, she had blocked off time to fire my boss. 3. During a zoom call, a colleague didn’t realize she had the camera pointing only at her chest. Btw, Laura, in the video is my cousin! 💕

This person applied to 1623 jobs, but how many were they truly qualified for? Probably only around 10. When you spray and pray your resume, you set yourself up for failure and rejection. Remember, successful job searching is not a numbers game, especially in this market. When a candidate applies to every job, from creative roles to market research and everything in-between, it shows a lack of focus. My advice? Understand your interests and skills. Choose companies with shared values. FOCUS on a small number of companies. Go deep, not broad. Instead of setting daily job application goals, set networking and connections goals with the companies you've selected. #JobSearch #CareerAdvice

Friends, I’ve been quiet on LinkedIn for a while. On September 5th, I lost my beloved mother, Patricia Whaley after a 3.5 year battle to a rare form of cancer, Appendiceal/PMP. Many of you knew her, either personally or through the stories I’ve shared over the years. If you have a memory of her that comes to mind, I would love it if you could share it. Professionally, my mother was a passionate educator and social historian. She loved her work as a professor of Sociology and Humanities at Durham College, where she touched countless lives. Even after her students had moved on, she stayed in contact with many of them until her final days. She was also a pioneer in advocating for women’s rights, co-founding a rape crisis center in the late '70s. Throughout my career, my mom was my rock and sounding board—even when she didn't fully understand my work (those of you in advertising may relate!). She was incredibly proud when I began teaching part-time at Humber College, and I often channel her presence when I’m in the classroom. She supported me in so many ways, including right here on LinkedIn, often liking and sharing my posts. This will be my first post without her name appearing in the comments or reactions. To my Junction Collective partners, clients, and candidates—thank you for your patience and support during this time. I'm curious. The role of a Recruiter varies by country and company. What do you think the main role of a Recruiter is in Canada?

It's called a break-up because it's broken. Those are wise words my mom imparted after I had a nasty break-up/get back together/ break-up again relationship many years ago. Her advice still resonates today. Just like in relationships, accepting a counter offer with your current employer after accepting a job offer elsewhere often leads to heartache. Using a job offer as leverage may seem tempting, but it rarely ends well. Your loyalty gets questioned, and your employer knows your true intentions. It's a temporary fix that doesn't address the root cause of your desire to leave. In fact, 50% of those who accept a counter offer end up leaving within a year. Remember, looking elsewhere is a sign of something that's already broken. Unless it's repaired, it will always remain broken. Thanks, mom, for the timeless advice.

"Stop hanging out with the C crowd" That's what a former 30-something President told me when I was Head of Strategy back in the mid-2000s. He wanted me to stop spending my time—socially and professionally—with the over 40s and align myself with the "A" crowd - the under 40s. My response: "I certainly hope you’re treated with more respect when you’re in the C crowd than you’re showing them today." That agency? It’s not on my LinkedIn for a reason—I was only there for a short blip. You can understand why. Ageism remains one of the most overlooked issues in advertising. While the industry is known for innovation and pushing boundaries, it often excludes experienced professionals from the conversation. We celebrate youth, but let's not forget the value of wisdom and years of expertise. Diversity of thought stems from diverse experiences—and that includes age. It’s time to challenge stereotypes and embrace talent at every stage of life.
