Those who know me know I love a good metaphor... This week I had the incredible opportunity of touring a breathtaking new building - just days from its grand opening - onsite at a long-time local client. As someone not typically immersed in the construction world, this was a unique and memorable experience. Beyond the stunning view (truly breathtaking), the building’s design is a masterclass in human-centred innovation - enlightened hospitality with a modern West Coast sparkle. The work I do often centres around a feeling - the energy or soul of a team or organization. It's Values - which are reflected as behaviours, and often felt in the intangible. It's a vibe... Enlightened hospitality... (generously borrowed from Danny Meyer) is not just about taking care of people, it’s doing so in a way that creates an experience. And because it’s about the experience we’re creating, it can be hard to put your finger on exactly what’s special about it. But I felt it. As I walked up, as the doors opened, as I watched artful details being completed, as I imagined people connecting, learning and designing in this space... This is the humble swagger of their values - it's part of what makes this organization special. The icing on the cake, though, was sharing it with my dear friend, colleague, and long-time mentor, Karen Jackson. After 10 years of working together, experiencing this moment side by side felt like a perfect metaphor for the work we do and meaningful connection we’ve built over the years. 💛 🌟🏢 #Architecture #Design #Mentorship #ClientPartnership #EnlightenedHospitality #OrganizationalDesign #team #Transformation #Culture #Values #Mentorship

It’s a tough environment for developers, but there are strategies—like focusing on cost-effective designs and engaging experienced contractors early—that can help. Interesting to read the European perspective about the difference between cost increases versus ROI and equity ratios. I’ve seen firsthand how critical it is to plan meticulously and stay adaptable in such volatile markets. It's about controlling the process and being able to anticipate changes to make decisions that ensure long-term success. The key is to think ahead and be prepared to adjust your approach as the landscape shifts. #AssetManagement #ConstructionCosts #HotelDevelopment

🎉 Architects + Free Bar = A Night to Remember… But Let’s Talk About the Bigger Picture Ah, the free bar. That glorious moment when the director raises a glass and declares the drinks are on them. For architects, it’s often a well-earned reward for relentless deadlines, late nights, and the creativity we pour into every project. And yes, we have fun—perhaps more fun than we should. The camaraderie flows as freely as the cocktails, and for a brief evening, the stress of the industry seems miles away. But here’s the thing: for many of us, that free bar is a small consolation in an industry where staff are often underpaid for their dedication and hard work. Consider this: 💼 Architects are problem-solvers, visionaries, and master planners—skills that are critical to the success of any project. ⏳ The hours we put in often exceed what’s reasonable, yet many of us still earn below what we’re worth. 🎯 The value we bring to businesses and clients is immense, but it’s not always reflected in our pay. Yes, a free bar is appreciated—it’s a nod to the effort we’ve all put in. But wouldn’t it be even better if architectural professionals were fairly compensated year-round? Let’s raise a glass, not just to good times, but to recognising the value of architects—not just in celebratory moments, but in every moment. What are your thoughts? Share your experiences below. #ArchitectureLife #FairPay #RecogniseTheValue

Morrison Design: Our Directors 5 years on 2024 marks five years at the helm for Directors Nik Clarke, David Gardner and Peter Newman-Earp. They took some time to reflect on their journey so far… What were the biggest challenges you faced in the first 5 years, and how did you overcome them? David: “We took over the business in 2019, not long before COVID hit in March 2020. We’d just taken the reins and were starting to look at the road ahead when the pandemic changed everything. Instead of focusing on growth and culture, we (like most businesses) had to concentrate on guiding the business through these extremely challenging circumstances and stabilising when the country started to recover. It was certainly a rocky ride to start our time as Directors.” How would you describe the company culture now, and what changes have you made since you took over? Nik: “Improvements to the culture in the practice was one of our main goals when taking over. We’re extremely proud of the strong heritage we have but knew it was time to modernise how we work. In 2021 we moved our studio to Darley Abbey Mills, a World Heritage Site in Derby - a bright, modern, open space which gives us more opportunity to collaborate and connect. We created a number of workstreams, run by our team, to improve the wellbeing of our employees and the sustainability of our practice. We’re delighted with how far we’ve come over the last 5 years and look forward to how we evolve in the next 5.” What are the most valuable lessons you’ve learned during your time as director? Peter: “We already knew we had a great team around us but since we took over it’s become even more clear. The team has almost doubled in size during the last 5 years and whether it’s someone who’s worked with us for decades or one of our more recent team members, they’re all key to the success of the business. Having great people around us is what makes what we do enjoyable and we’re driven to do better because of them.” Head over to our blog to read more: https://lnkd.in/gGyJjzef #architecture #projectmanagement #principaldesigner #architects

Yeagers Consulting: Where Expertise Meets Empathy in Accessibility What makes Yeagers Consulting unique is the combination of real-world construction expertise and a deep empathy for the people who use the spaces we help create. With over 35 years of hands-on experience, I’ve seen how the built environment can either support or hinder individuals—and that’s what drives me to create spaces that genuinely work for everyone. But it's not just about knowing building codes and regulations—it’s about understanding how people with different needs interact with their environment. Every client, whether a homeowner looking to age in place or a business seeking to improve accessibility for customers, has their own set of challenges and priorities. That’s where empathy comes in. We listen carefully to the unique needs of each client and create tailored solutions that go beyond the basics of compliance. At Yeagers Consulting, we don’t just focus on the technical aspects of accessibility. We make sure that every solution fits seamlessly with the people who will be using it. Whether it's a family adapting their home for aging in place or a commercial property making space for all customers, we approach each project with the goal of improving lives through thoughtful design. What sets me apart is this combination of expertise, creativity, and empathy. I don’t just see accessibility as a set of guidelines—I see it as a way to transform spaces into environments that empower people and enhance their quality of life. If you’re looking for a personalized approach to accessibility that considers both the technical and human side, let’s connect and discuss how we can make your space work for everyone. #WhatMakesMeUnique #AccessibilityConsulting #ExpertiseAndEmpathy #InclusiveDesign #ClientCenteredSolutions #YeagersConsulting
