Dave is victorious!
Our Directors competed in a retro bike race yesterday, raising over £400 for Alzheimer's Society. David Gardner was triumphant 🥇, with Nik Clarke coming in a close second 🥈and Peter Newman-Earp finishing the race in bronze medal position 🥉
It was a close race with Nik and Dave on the two BMXs and Pete picking out the Raleigh Chopper. They all fought hard with the team cheering them on but after an early overtake by Dave he couldn’t be caught.
A huge thank you to our Directors for taking part and to John and Jo for helping to organise the event.
We look forward to seeing Pete dressed as St. Nicholas on Friday 🎅
The winners of our prizes are:
1st prize (£100): Tom Holmes, Rodgers Leask
2nd prize (£50): Carina McBarnett, AtkinsRéalis
3rd prize (£20): Colin Murtagh
Congratulations to all our prize winners and a huge thank you to everyone who donated.

Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding how UK charitable trusts and foundations fared in 2022-23, the challenges they faced and how they are worked to navigate those challenges.
👏 I welcome the fact that the Association of Charitable Foundations does such hard work to inform the public about the world of grantmaking foundations.
👏 The work they do is a powerful tool to address the imbalance between funders and grantees.
The need for support in 2022-23 increased more than ever and saw the term 'polycrisis' become a commonly used description for the interconnected and overlapping crises affecting climate, global health, economies and social systems'.
🤔 This report shows how grantmaking foundations did an immense amount of self-reflection, and adopted a more strategic approach, for what they could do to address this - and it provides a number of examples about who did what.
The overall public view of funders (and philanthropists in general) is often that they are in their own little bubble, and do what they assume needs to be done, rather than what actually does need to be done.
🤞 But I hope this report is seen as a demonstration that is old-school thinking. Things have changed. Those with excess capital have begun to reach out to those with lived experiences, getting more informed, and becoming more transparent about their activities.
In every day life, criticism that is badly delivered often backfires. I put forward the same could be true for foundations. A critique of their work is not a bad thing... but they should be welcomed, educated and encouraged - that is the only way we will be able to find more synergies between all of the stakeholders in this sector 👍.
🙏 Many thanks to Carol Mack and her team for all of their hard work to make this happen.

Big News! 🎉 We’re excited to announce that we’ve secured a grant from the Q2 Philanthropy Fund to power our mission of empowering elders in India with Digital Literacy! 📱✨
Did you know?
- Only 39% of elders have smartphone access
- A staggering 59% have NO access at all
- Males have more access (47%) than females
- Only 43% of those aged 60-69 have access to digital devices
As technology evolves, many elders are left behind, vulnerable to online scams. That’s why HelpAge India’s ‘Digital Literacy & Safety’ workshops are vital in helping elders stay safe online.
For nearly 50 years, HelpAge India has been a pillar of support, and we at American Friends of HelpAge India are proud to carry this legacy forward. A huge thank you to the Q2 Philanthropy Fund for supporting us! 💛 Together, we’re ensuring elders in India lead a dignified, connected life.
