National Youth Defense System Standards The Gault Center has just released their newest resource, The National Youth Defense System Standards, https://lnkd.in/dTet5NwU The System Standards provide a metric to assess a state’s compliance with constitutional mandates that safeguard the rights of young people in the juvenile legal system, with a particular focus on the right to counsel. The System Standards call on states to invest in well-resourced youth defense delivery systems to comply with their constitutional obligations to provide every single youth facing liberty deprivations with a qualified and zealous attorney. A Line Uncrossed Generally speaking, it is not the best practice for active-duty law enforcement officers to engage in political commentary due to the obvious nature of being viewed as partisan. That is, until those figures deliberately engage in tactics that place officers in harm’s way to score political points. Here, we have the current Governor of New York being turned away from the funeral of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller who was recently murdered by a career criminal. I am sure she knew that there would be somewhat of an uncomfortable moment considering her current stance towards releasing felons from prison. It is my sincere desire that these elected officials begin to distance themselves from the failed "defund", anti-police rhetoric that is dying a quick death due to the obvious, tangible level of violence in America today. The legitimacy of the US Supreme Court is in question. With their recent presidential immunity decision, the Supreme Court is no longer the impartial third branch of the US Government. Congress MUST put aside partisanship and use their power of checks and balances to defend democracy against a short-sighted Supreme Court. WHAT SEPARATES AMERICA FROM AN AUTHORITARIAN COUNTRY? It's that there is a single-tier justice system, whereas in authoritarian countries there are at least two tiers -- one for the general population and one for the governing and connected elite. Yet what is found in authoritarian countries is exactly what Trump argues should be in America -- one system for you and me, and another system for Trump.
