🔍 When it comes to predicting shear strength in granular materials, precision is paramount. Our latest study introduces a novel criterion that aligns impressively with the ideal predictive accuracy, as shown in our recent validation tests. While some models overestimate (Indraratna 1993, 1994 and 1998), others like Barton-Kjaersli 1981, may underestimate the sheer strength. The XVIII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (#ECSMGE2024) starts on Monday, August 26, in Lisbon. Mirosław Lipiński, Wojciech Tymiński, and Tomasz Kiełczewski will represent our company at this event. Two articles co-authored by our colleagues will be published in the conference proceedings, and Mirosław Lipiński will present his. I'm thrilled to announce that our recent paper, titled "Micro-Macro Assessment of The Pile Bearing Capacity Interaction with Single and Double Voids in Different Soil Densities Using The Discrete Element Method," has been published in ASCE Publishing prestigious International Journal of Geomechanics. In this study, our team explored the impact of soil variability, influenced by environmental changes, on geotechnical considerations. We focused on underground voids, which significantly affect subsoil structures such as piles. Using a two-dimensional Discrete Elements Method (DEM) model, we investigated voids in sandy soil and their effects on pile behavior, particularly bearing capacity and lateral pressure coefficients. Our results reveal that voids can reduce pile bearing capacity by up to 63% in critical zones, mainly due to decreased resistance at the pile's tip. This highlights the crucial importance of understanding void effects for safe subsoil structure design in geotechnical engineering. Excited to share our recently published article in the Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering Journal, "Addressing the inherent stress non-uniformity in dynamic hollow cylinder testing"! 📚 Our team is delving into experimental geotechnical engineering investigations, aiming to quantify errors in soil strength properties resulting from inherent deficiencies in experimental processes. In this latest paper, we shed light on how concealed deficiencies in complex laboratory devices in geotechnical engineering, specifically the dynamic hollow cylinder apparatus, can lead to substantial errors in soil dynamic properties. A crucial heads-up for fellow engineers: be mindful when incorporating soil dynamic properties obtained from the device in your design or analysis of geostructures. I am delighted to present our latest research in the field of #CoastalEngineering. Our investigation concerns the collapse of the #PontdelPetroli pier during Storm Gloria. We employed #CompositeModelling to gain insight into the structural response under extreme wave conditions. Our findings were obtained through the use of focus wave groups. 🌊 This work was conduced in collaboration with Manuel Viñes Recasens F. Xavier Gironella i Cobos Andrea Marzeddu César Mösso and Joaquim Sospedra from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). **In brief** In January 2020, the footbridge of the Pont del Petroli pier in Badalona collapsed as a result of the storm known as Gloria. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the event in question, a composite modelling approach was developed which combined numerical simulations and physical experiments. The findings indicated that an increase in wave asymmetry results in a heightened impact on structures, thereby emphasising the necessity to consider the shape and breaking pattern of waves in the design of coastal infrastructure with a view to enhancing resilience. This research illustrates the value of integrating numerical and experimental methodologies to enhance comprehension of the forces acting on coastal structures during extreme weather events and to facilitate their mitigation. This advanced technology plays a crucial role in modern engineering and environmental monitoring.   🛰️ Attendees were introduced to the practical application of InSAR data for high-precision monitoring of impacts on structures and buildings due to subsurface changes. This session emphasized the significance of accurate data in understanding and mitigating potential #risks associated with geological and environmental changes.   🏗️ Examples discussed included both natural phenomena and man-made alterations, such as groundwater fluctuations, which can have substantial effects on infrastructure. With the outstanding experts of Lombardi Engineering Switzerland (Remo Crapp) and Amberg Engineering (Kurt Mair am Tinkhof and Nedim Radoncic) a contribution is now published about the geomechanical loading of the segmental linings of the Brenner Base Tunnel. (Thank you a lot for all your work these years!!) Excavation of deep-lying tunnels in the alpine region using hard rock TBMs requires an in-depth examination of the geological, geotechnical and hydrological conditions, the machine design and support design. This article deals in detail with the question of determining the geomechanical loading of the segmental lining using the example of the Brenner Base Tunnel project. Thus, the extensive explorations required for this purpose and the documentation of the exploratory tunnel during construction as well as their evaluation and interpretation to determine the geomechanical loading, are explained. Nevertheless, a single-lining, the expanded long service life and the remaining uncertainties require portfolio of construction measures and monitoring of the tunnel’s construction and operating status. For people within this subject we are sorry that we couldn't addresse the deeper details, it would definitely blast the length of this article.
