CPT, or Current Procedural Terminology, codes are a set of codes used in medical billing to describe medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and procedures performed by healthcare providers. These codes are maintained and published by the American Medical Association (AMA). CPT codes serve several purposes, including: -Billing and Reimbursement: Health insurance companies use CPT codes to determine the amount of reimbursement a healthcare provider should receive for a particular service or procedure. -Documentation: CPT codes help in documenting the services and procedures provided during a patient's visit, which is crucial for medical records and communication among healthcare professionals. -Research and Analysis: CPT codes are also used in healthcare research and analysis to track trends, outcomes, and utilization of different medical services. Each CPT code corresponds to a specific medical service or procedure. For example, there are codes for office visits, surgeries, laboratory tests, radiology procedures, and more. These codes typically have five digits and are updated annually to reflect changes in medical practice. Healthcare providers use CPT codes in conjunction with ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition) codes, which describe diagnoses, to create a comprehensive record of a patient encounter for billing and insurance purposes. #medicalclaims #rcm #healthcarefinance #optimization #innovation #revenuecyclemanagement #healthtech #financialhealth #healthcaretransformation #efficiency #futureofhealthcare #medicalbilling #healthcareinnovation #financerevolution #healthcarefuture #billingexperts #accountreceivable #healthcarefinance #insuranceclaims #healthcaremanagement #BillingProcess #healthcarebilling #insurancereimbursement #cptcodes #icd10 #financialhealth #medicalcoding #healthcareadministration #claimsubmission

This scam involves signing up Medicare enrollees for remote patient monitoring (RPM). Legitimate RPM involves using medical devices such as scales, glucose monitors, blood pressure cuffs, cardiac rhythm devices, and other equipment to remotely monitor for anomalies in patients with chronic medical conditions. This new treatment is beneficial for those whose condition might deteriorate quickly, where monitoring can reduce complications, hospitalizations, or death. Unscrupulous companies are signing up Medicare enrollees for this service, regardless of medical necessity. Scammers have several ways to make contact. It may involve phone solicitations (“cold calling”), internet ads (“click bait”), or television advertising. These contacts may originate from a Durable Medical Equipment Company (DME) or pharmacy. Equipment may or may not be sent or is equipment that is not FDA approved. Billing then occurs for set-up, patient teaching, and monthly monitoring of data. Most often, the monthly monitoring never happens, but the enrollee is billed monthly anyway. #unitedseniorassociation #usa #hss #oig #cms #eldercare #seniorhealth #hssoig #fda #RPM #healthcare

Classic Catch-22 for both patients and doctors while the healthcare organizations are still overworking the doctors and underserving the patients. I’m talking cut-and-paste, a shortcut that time-starved doctors are using to update electronic medical records. Wrong info in your medical records is a major #PatientSafety issue. There are many reasons why it happens and the timesaving act of cut-and-paste by physicians exacerbates it. It can be very difficult to get rid of those mistakes. It’s happened to me. I quickly dropped a narcotic medication I took post surgery but it lingered on my medical records for over a year leading to some stressful conversations. Another practice accidentally inverted the numbers of my weight and I went from slender to obese, according to my medical records. Suddenly I was barraged with weight loss messages from several of my medical practices and calls from my insurance company to get me into a program I didn’t need. That’s merely irritating (even though it took me multiple visits and calls to get both corrected). For others it’s deadly. Cut-and-paste leads to #DiagnosticErrors, #TreatmentErrors, #MedicationErrors and even death, so why do doctors do it? Because they can be dinged for not getting their records completed in time despite the institution not giving them enough time with or between patients. Now, organizations are starting to punish the doctors who overuse cut-and-paste. Other organizations have deactivated the ability to right click on a mouse or to use CTRL – C and CTRL – V. And for good reason. Yet, the practice has become such an important timesaver for doctors, there are even Reddit threads about how to get around the new restrictions.
