A recent report by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that the most underserved communities are least able to prepare for, and recover from, extreme heat waves, poor air quality, flooding and other climate-related events. "This has been a pattern across the United States for a long time, and as climate change increases, we see this problem exacerbated"-Ahmed Gaya, director for the National Partnership for New Americans SOUTHERN VISION ALLIANCE (SVA) is ensuring that directly impacted communities have a voice in addressing environmental injustice in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. SVA provides advocacy and organizing trainings, alongside mini grants to support community convenings. Collaborating with the #EPA, they're building a model that centers power and possibility within communities directly and disproportionately impacted by racial and environmental injustice. Please join the San Luis Obispo County Climate Justice Alliance for a screening of the environmental justice-themed documentary “Cooked: Survival by Zip Code” on Sunday, September 22nd at 1 pm at the Palm Theatre in downtown SLO. Directed and produced by the Peabody Award-winning Judith Helfand (adapting the book “Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago” by Eric Klinenberg), “Cooked” tells the shocking story of a 1995 heat wave that devastated the most vulnerable and impoverished communities in Chicago. As the temperature climbed to 104, people could not open their windows, because they were nailed shut against the crime-ridden streets. As the death toll climbs to 800, we watch as local government officials go from concerned to defensive to questioning that so many deaths were attributable to the heat. As “Cooked” so forcefully points out, we can celebrate that governments are more prepared to respond to natural disasters than ever before, but we’ve done little to address the underlying socio-economic conditions. There will be a community discussion following the screening featuring highlights of local resiliency programs and resources. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office or online: https://lnkd.in/gTkfy-X9 The SLO County Climate Justice Alliance is comprised of local climate and diversity nonprofits, including SLO Climate Coalition, Diversity Coalition San Luis Obispo County, Ecologistics, RACE Matters, and Cal Poly Initiative for Climate Leadership and Resilience. #environmentaljustice #climatejustice #socialjustice #heatwave #documentary #SanLuisObispo #PalmTheatre #SLOCountyClimateJusticeAlliance #SLOCCJA #CalPolyICLR #DiversityCoalitionSLO #SLOClimateCoalition #Ecologistics #RACEMattersSLO

Funding Opportunity ICYMI: The Community Change Grants (CCG) program will award funds to communities via projects that fit into one of two Tracks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will allocate most of the funding to Track I projects. Track I offers an unprecedented opportunity to reshape communities through significant funding dedicated to overcoming deep-rooted and historic environmental issues. Projects under Track I will significantly improve environmental, climate, pollution, and resilience conditions affecting disadvantaged communities. The EPA plans to award 150 of these grants in amounts ranging from $10 to 20 million. #funding #environmentaljustice https://lnkd.in/gUxCsreS

During #HarlemWeek's Climate and Environmental Justice in Harlem, local researchers, elected officials, and community leaders discussed how to create a safer, healthier future for communities disproportionately affected by climate change, pollution, and other substantial challenges. "The impacts that Harlem and the Bronx and parts of Brooklyn experience are not just heat and flooding and climate impacts—they actually intersect with a number of other challenges that these communities face. The quality of their housing, lack of jobs… We know from academic studies that formerly redlined communities in every city across the country are many degrees warmer during heat waves than communities that were not redlined. We also know from studies that those communities have much of the same demographics that they did in the 1940s, when the federal government drew a line around these communities, denied them mortgages and paved the way for decades of disinvestment," said Sheila Foster, Columbia Climate School professor of climate. Southern Arizona has a network of cooling centers, but as more extreme heat days drive demand, there are challenges in access, visibility, and capacity. These climate change effects are clear, as are the impacts of inaction, which is why Justicia Juntos, an initiative led by Amistades, Inc., is a great model for cities seeking meaningful partnerships that result in true community change. Learn more about how this project leveraged an Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem Solving Cooperative Agreement grant award from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to combat the effects of extreme heat on Latino communities in the city of Tucson, AZ. https://lnkd.in/ecGVEuxY #localinfrastructurehub #federalgrants #climateimpacts #equitableaccess

Breaking Climate News! 📢 AmeriCorps VISTA and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have joined forces to create the Environmental Justice Climate Corps! This new partnership will engage hundreds of young Americans in helping communities across the country develop and carry out pollution reduction and climate resilience projects as they gain skills and experience for good paying clean energy and climate careers. This new program is a part of the American Climate Corps and is the largest environmental partnership in AmeriCorps’ history and EPA’s first nationwide service effort. The Environmental Justice Climate Corps will engage more than 250 members in VISTA over the next three years in full-time, yearlong service terms supporting EPA’s goals to cut pollution, create jobs, and lower energy costs. Members will serve across the country, helping organizations in disadvantaged and other low-income communities access federal resources to carry out locally driven projects to reduce pollution, increase community climate resilience, improve public health and safety, and build community capacity to address environmental justice and climate challenges. Applications for the Environmental Justice Climate Corps will open in early 2025, with the first cohort of members starting later that year. This program will aim to recruit members from communities overburdened impacts of climate change. As the climate warms, Pennsylvania rainfalls are becoming more extreme while flood-related risks are worsening and the intensity is only expected to increase. Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering and Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation are partnering with the Allegheny County Health Department and Landforce, an employment and environmental social enterprise, through a three-year $930,411 Environmental Justice Government-to-Government grant to increase climate resilience in environmental justice communities through water-based cleanup projects and green infrastructure to minimize flooding and associated public health risks in environmentally burdened communities in the county. https://lnkd.in/gmAjaDGN
