🌟 First Hackathon Experience: Unforgettable and Inspiring! 🌟 I’m still buzzing with excitement and gratitude after participating in the Value-Based Healthcare Hackathon organized by Roche, the Swiss Society for Value Based Healthcare , and the Fakultät für Gesundheitswissenschaften und Medizin – Universität Luzern. As this was my first-ever hackathon, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. But what I found was a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with incredibly talented and driven individuals, learn deeply about healthcare innovation, and challenge myself in ways I hadn’t imagined. Working alongside Anina Landert, Maximillian Oppermann, and Elina S. was such a rewarding experience. I’m so grateful for their support, creativity, and openness throughout this journey. Together, we pushed each other to think critically and come up with solutions we were all proud to present. A huge thanks to Yannik Marc Breitenstein, Florian Rüter, and Jessica Thürmer for their valuable guidance and feedback. Your insights helped us elevate our ideas and made the entire experience so much more impactful. Lastly, winning the jury prize was the cherry on top—but the true win for me was being part of a process where collaboration, innovation, and passion came together to create something meaningful. To anyone who’s hesitant about stepping into something new like a hackathon: JUST DO IT! You never know how much you’ll grow, learn, and enjoy the ride. I struggled to get this post out, as it is much more than publicising a healthcare hackathon for me. It hit me hard in questioning my core purpose. It made me reflect again that till today, I don’t have clear answers to questions I’ve set out to solve years ago with a more idealistic mindset. After all in the real-world, healthcare can be messy, tedious and filled with countless stakeholders to engage, just to deliver better patient experiences and care for the masses. It’s easy to feel frustrated, helpless and get swept along the waves of decisions made, and having to deal with the impact behind the scenes. Perhaps I might be alone in this taboo-like thinking, but I would like to believe that I am not. Even so, despite the naysayers, I believe in the powerful potential of hackathons. I believe that they can help to springboard healthcare innovation and bring multi-disciplinary teams closer towards implementation to make a difference. A ripple it may be in the complex ecosystem, but a difference it still is. In our super-aged society, there remains many challenges to help one to age well; to optimise patient care at the hospital and community while not only minimising healthcare professional burnout, but also caregiver burnout. A long story to make my point, but I decided to share honestly why I’ve taken the plunge to co-organise this hackathon. Thankful to the entire team and all our partners for supporting this event. 🚀 Looking forward to a promising New Year with HACK-IT-NET!   As we step into 2025, the HACK-IT-NET - Alpine Space project is already gearing up for another exciting year of #innovation and #collaboration! Since its launch in July 2024, we’ve made incredible strides with our project partners in tackling the complex challenges of the #healthcare sector in Baden-Württemberg. 🎯 Key highlight from 2024: Together with Baden-Württemberg stakeholders from the health and care sector, the challenges and needs of the healthcare sector in the region were analysed. The identfied key topics included… ➡️ ensuring comprehensive healthcare with an increasing shortage of specialists, ➡️ prevention-oriented healthcare, ➡️ rising costs of the health and care sector and access to innovative diagnostics and therapy, ➡️ the impact of climate change on healthcare and sustainability in the healthcare sector,  ➡️ intra- and interdisciplinary as well as intra- and intersectoral cooperation,  ➡️ digitalization and interoperability, ➡️ financing innovation and translation,  ➡️ regulation and bureaucracy. Looking ahead to 2025, we are thrilled to focus on the implementation of our innovative Toolkit Portfolio. Great to be at the UKSPA - The United Kingdom Science Park Association summer conference  with people who connect universities and businesses to create innovation ecosystems that are the bedrock of thriving regional economies. If there is a take home message it is that one size doesn’t fit all. Each region has different strengths, assets and needs - and universities, which are deeply embedded in their local areas and have research expertise, are often at the centre of innovation clusters for these very reasons. Finding appropriate space to work is usually the first hurdle for innovators, and we heard compelling presentations from conference host STEAMhouse, TechWM, Get Nourish3d, Tyseley Energy Park, and Pigeon Posted on this topic.   The innovation spaces in Birmingham all have their own distinctive flavour. In the medical technology sector, companies have highly specialised needs in terms of equipment and expertise – and pre-revenue companies need it to be affordable. The award-winning Unit 9 incubator run by University of Birmingham Enterprise meets these needs directly for emerging health tech companies. Located at Birmingham Research Park, Unit 9 has an equipment-sharing agreement with the University of Birmingham, and access to facilities for cell culture or microbiology work at the neighbouring BioHub, Birmingham®. Meet Dr. Laila Al Afnan, MPH-c, a dedicated and exemplary member of our PH360 2024 cohort from Florida International University, United States. Initial Impressions: I was thoroughly impressed by the 360 fellowship program. What stood out to me was GHEP's instructors' commitment to imparting crucial public health competencies to students within three months. I believe this is what professionalism is. Impact on Career: The program has provided me with essential hands-on experience in public health, allowing me to apply the knowledge I have gained in a real-world setting. This practical experience has helped me to develop my skills and competencies, preparing me for a career in public health. Moreover, I had the opportunity to practice new topics, such as food insecurity, that I had no experience with before, and by being in the 360 program, I had the chance to challenge my comfort zone and try different exciting topics. Additionally, the mentorship and guidance I have received through the PH360 program have been invaluable in shaping my professional development. I have had the opportunity to learn from experienced public health professionals and receive feedback on my work, helping me continuously improve and grow in my role. Health tech is gaining momentum! When (10 y ago) I was a health policy analyst and program lead at Praxis Think Tank and published the Country-wide telemedicine adoption green paper*, commissioned by Riigikantselei / Government Office of Estonia & then the number of active digital health and health tech companies could be counted with the fingers on just one hand. Our Dermtest's first start goes to that time and have to say, it was pretty lonely in the community back then, when even the definition of e-health or telemedicine was unclear for most. One could only dream of having such an ecosystem pushing the whole health innovation community forward like it is now in 2024! Company-creation is booming at all fronts with cross-country collaboration ever-present and this event is just one small example of that. From the whole pathway of innovation we have the unis of University of Tartu and TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, where future researchers innovators and innovation-enablers emerge, with even a focused TalTech Digital Health MSc programme an MBA-like change manager builder. But there are also community and growth supporters at idea+ stage, where you get help for your health tech business development (former CHC, now Tehnopol HealthTech and newly emerged Health Founders Estonia). There is funding-appetite from courageous angel investors, who understand, why investing in health tech is important and that it can give positive returns in human life-years & life quality, but also investment. There are spin-off funds like UniTartu Ventures and health-focused or health-tech leaning VC-s like Verge HealthTech Fund or Specialist VC. Furthermore the Ministry of Social Affairs of Estonia / Sotsiaalministeerium and Tervisekassa (Estonian Health Insurance Fund) and Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications of Estonia are figuring out (and have figured out some) ways how to make innovation adoption faster with right incentives for outcome-based care, while Tervise ja Heaolu Infosüsteemide Keskus // Health and Welfare Information Systems Centre (TEHIK) enables high quality data for secondary research use, but also enables digital health companies to connect to Estonia's care pathways. Super, if not most important are also the very innovation-aware patients (and patient organisations) and the toughest role of being a health care provider (organisations and individuals), who have an increasing need and want for change, but who also know, that change is hard and one needs to set a right pace for that. List is long and does not end here.
