Exciting news in renewable energy! Burns & McDonnell has completed nine solar projects in Wisconsin as part of Alliant Energy's Clean Energy Blueprint. These projects are expected to power around 170,000 homes with clean electricity. Despite challenges, including the pandemic and supply chain disruptions, Burns & McDonnell delivered these projects on time. The solar program also provided opportunities for over 1,300 craft workers and focused on local employment. Safety and sustainability were prioritized, with projects receiving recognition for their environmental efforts. Ohio's clean energy projects, funded by a $129.4 million EPA grant under the Inflation Reduction Act, are expected to enhance solar energy generation on closed landfills and brownfields. The initiative will add 28 MW of solar power to Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, with a larger 35 MW solar and 10 MW battery storage project planned for a brownfield site in Painesville, Lake County. This project will enable the closure of a coal-fired plant dating back to 1908. The landfill and brownfield solar projects not only increase renewable energy capacity but also offer environmental benefits by reducing greenhouse gases and generating revenue for further environmental initiatives. The solar installations use ballast systems to avoid damaging landfill caps, ensuring environmental safety. The projects are expected to cut 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 25 years. The success of these projects could inspire future solar developments on Ohio’s numerous closed landfill sites, contributing to the state’s clean energy goals. #CleanEnergy #NetZero https://lnkd.in/gy3zjtjT

While the DOE has invested in social studies specific to solar siting and permitting, I can see how the results of these studies could be used in industries outside of renewable energy to understand and strategize around NIMBYism on all kinds of infrastructure projects.
