At the annual Life Rolls On Foundation They Will Surf Again event, volunteers from Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation gathered in Wildwood, New Jersey, to help individuals with disabilities conquer the waves. This inspiring day was filled with courage, determination, and community spirit, as participants with spinal cord injuries experienced the thrill of surfing with the support of our dedicated therapists, doctors, nurses, and staff. The Fams NSW Brief to Minister Kate Washington provides important insights on the Family Preservation Framework, and where the system needs to change. It reflects many of the concerns raised in our recent engagement with stakeholders about the child protection and out-of-home care systems, which we summarise here ☛ https://lnkd.in/gQz7F2rb This insight from Fams particularly resonates with us: “Language holds immense power, and the words we choose establish the framework for everything beneath them.” The term “case worker” is an apt example of a non-relational use of language – a child is a human being, not a case! It’s why we talk about developing a new “Child Connection System”. We need more than a child protection system. We want real relationships to form the heart of child protection and out-of-home care. ➡ To find out more visit https://lnkd.in/gApPeN_t #childconnectionsystem Susan Watson
Fams submitted a brief to Minister Kate Washington MP this week, harnessing sector expertise for a redesigned service model for Family Preservation in NSW. The Minister has requested a meeting with Fams for further discussion in 2024. Click here to read the brief - https://lnkd.in/eW6WdGwi The key sector insights include centring child-focused language in all aspects of service design, TEI and Family Preservation as a continuum of care, rural, regional and remote specific considerations, disrupting the cycle of rereport and closure, flexibility in service models and adequate funding to ensure service capacity. We are committed to continuing our support in the Family Preservation sector leading up to recommissioning and beyond. #safechildren #strongfamilies #supportivecommunities

The state of New York has it right!... easing restrictions on PA practice increases access to care for Americans. Help us in Maryland get the PA Modernization Act (SB 0167) passed!! We need your help to get a strong vote in committee, both chambers of the Maryland General Assembly, and to get the bill signed by the Governor. The legislation addresses the following issues for PAs: -->Moving away from “supervision” to describe the nature of the PA working relationship with physicians and replacing it with “collaboration.” -->Eliminating delegation agreements and replacing them with collaboration registrations. -->Allowing scope of practice to be based upon a PA’s education, training, experience, and competencies rather than the physician’s scope. How you can help: Click the link https://p2a.co/ckYXF5Y to use the pre-written message we have provided to send an email to your legislators asking them to support this bill. Please customize this message using your own personal story. The more personal this message is the better! #MarylandPA #PAstudent #PAsGoBeyond #PhysicianAssistant #PhysicianAssociate

CREATE is pleased to see the Victorian Budget 2024/25 prioritises children and families with $374 million allocated to protecting children and supporting their families. The $198 million commitment to delivering more early intervention services to help keep families together is critical to interrupting prolonged cycles of contact with the out-of-home care system. This will help to ensure the capacity of the system to intervene early and deliver adequate intensive family supports to avoid escalation of risk. We also see the timely provision of $38 million to support carers providing home-based care for children and young people as a welcome relief measure in the midst of the rising cost of living. This move should help to ensure that carers can continue to support the children in their care. While CREATE acknowledges the $6.8 million to support the extension of the Yoorrook Justice Commission as the formal truth-telling process with Aboriginal peoples in Victoria and the Government’s engagement with the process, we reiterate calls to implement in full recommendations from Yoorrook for Justice. This would demonstrate a genuine commitment to true partnership by transferring decision-making power, authority, control and resources to First Peoples, to advance self-determination across the Victorian child protection system. #VicBudget #CREATEfnd

New technologies have the potential to improve the quality of life of individuals in social care settings. However, past experiences have demonstrated that implementing monitoring and surveillance systems without prioritising human rights can have devastating effects on vulnerable people. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct thorough human rights assessments before deploying new tech to determine its potential impact on personal liberty, privacy, and dignity. In social care, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution, as what works well for one person may be rights breaching for another. It is essential to adopt a human rights-based approach to care planning the use of tech to ensure that it enhances person-centered care rather than infringes on rights.

Yesterday, the NDP released its full platform. The platform outlines promises that expand on their government’s developments to: - Continuing to improve quality, supported care for seniors by building 5,400 new and replacement beds at 32 long-term care facilities across BC. - Making sure all seniors in long-term care receive the same high-quality care by providing common wages, benefits, and working conditions for staff across public and private long-term care homes. - Expanding the Better at Home program so more seniors get the support they need to remain in their homes as they age – while easing demand on long-term care homes. - Expanding the Hospital at Home program so seniors with long-term health conditions that require more intensive medical support don’t have to stay in hospital, freeing up beds and improving quality of life. - Helping more seniors make rent and reduce costs by qualifying more people for SAFER (Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters) and increasing the support available for individual renters. - Committing $324 million over three years to boost programs that help seniors thrive in their homes and communities, instead of moving into care. This funding will hire more nurses, physiotherapists, health care assistants, and home support workers. More 👇 #seniors #bcpolic
