Program Manager, Ominira Initiative| Honorable Member, Oyo State Youth Parliament| Fellow, Legislative Mentorship Initiative| Certified Community Organizer @YIAGA Africa| Public Administrator|
Community Development Starts from Personal Development Recently, I was in Dar es Salam Tanzania to lecture young people from Eastern Africa on the “Politics of Policy Making,” during the Policy Hangout organized by Cheetahs Policy Institute. While exposing them to the process of policy making, analyzing policies in Africa using case studies, I also spoke on the need embrace strategies and methodologies that will promote community development. During my practical session, I asked them to mention their representatives at various assemblies but only a few of them could. I also asked them about their perception on politics and what they are doing in their respective communities to promote development; but I discovered that a lot of them are passionate about community development but lack basic skills for advocacy. Personal Development is crucial to achieving community development. You can be passionate about creating change and lack the ability to drive the change. If you are a young person, it should be part of your daily routine to bring change to your immediate environment and you need quality exposure and the capacity to drive the change. So, for you to promote development, even at your work, personal development is crucial. Our communities need more young people, particularly now that we are advocating for youth inclusion, thanks to Yiaga Africa for making sure of this, but, we also need to build ourselves- invest in personal development, to be involved. #personaldevelopment #communitydevelopment

This is a summary of my article published in Development in Practice. Empowerment is an essential component of the rights-based approach to community development. We empower our program participants to enhance their socio-economic conditions in the development sector. But will empowerment guarantee a dignified life for those who receive it? The discourse on empowerment needs to enhance the concept of dignity. By conceptualizing dignity, the theory of empowerment will be complete. For more information, read my article "Violation of Human Dignity: a Case Study of Dalit Adolescent Girls in Nepal" here: https://lnkd.in/gdhvU64b. I thank Development in Practice Journal (DiP) for publishing this article. #dignity #empowerment #development #rightsbasedapproach
