"I have difficulty staying consistent in writing daily." Here's an easy trick to write consistently. Structure. When I first started writing on LinkedIn, the blank page disease killed me. I couldn't get past it. That dang cursor sat on the page, blinking at me. At first, I muscle my way through. Forcing myself to write. But what I wrote sucked. It was all over the place. It wasn't engaging. No clear lesson. Until I remembered structure from fiction writing. When I wrote fiction, I started with a structure. • Inciting incident • Rising action • Climax • Falling action • Resolution. I did the same for posts: • Hook • Before • Change • After And filled in the rest. Structure gave me the outline. Once I did that, I could fill in the rest. Writing consistently isn't about will power. It's about reducing friction with structure.  PS: How do you write consistently?

Reading & Writing isn’t something you finish at the end of your work day. It’s one of humanity’s oldest tools. Sure, writing instructive blog posts, telling brand stories, and selling with great copy is a big part of it. But those are just some of the ways to reap the benefits of writing. Doing it is a wonder tool. Mastering it is a super power.

Remember this in moments of despair.”- William Zinsser When I was young, I used to feel that writing is a gift which only a few fortunate people are born with. It was more of an inherited trait which enabled some of the lucky people to become bestselling authors. One of the popular imageries associated with an author is a solitude human figure who is in deep introspection, absorbing the natural landscape and waiting for the Muse to appear who can bestow upon the path-breaking, brilliant creative idea that can be translated into a classic magnum opus. No wonder, it is believed that writing is not everyone’s cup of tea! Over time, I inculcated a more realistic perspective of writing. The enriching collaborative and interaction sessions with various authors from all walks of life made me realize that being a professional writer is not a sprint, it is a marathon. More than talent, persistence and consistency plays an integral role in honing your literary craft. Just like an athlete who slogs on the field to build his stamina and perfect his racing techniques, a writer needs to have discipline in their armoury to excel. Along with right books of course! If we talk about my writing armoury, then there are certain books which have been instrumental in cementing my foundations concepts and principles. I like to call them “my writing mentor”. Whenever in doubt, I have turned to these pages to seek clarity, creative inputs and meaningful advice. For anyone who is venturing into writing or is looking forward to refining their craft, these books are tried and tested in offering effective guidance. Have you ever read a book that felt like you were sitting in a writing class at university? I did, just a few days ago. I won’t hold a massive suspense. The book is called “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain” by George Saunders – an award-winning writer, and a professor in the creative writing program at Syracuse University, New York. But here’s how and why I picked it up. 💁♀️ Recently, I’ve been feeling uninspired stuck overwhelmed  lazy …all the classical symptoms of the notorious creative block. 🫣 Still, new ideas for creative projects kept coming to my head after finishing “The Creative Act: A Way of Being,” which: + reintroduced me to what being creative means on a whole another level, + made me believe that my ideas matter for reasons I might not fully understand. I realized, that all I’ve been lacking were the “tools” ⚒️ for making my ideas come to life. Thus, I decided to take the initiative to work on my strengths and weaknesses. The timing of this book was perfect for me, and I’m only a little bit in, but the way it develops is all that a writer needs in times of creative blocks. The book is structured and written in a way that makes you feel as if you’re attending one of the author’s writing classes at the university, which, I won’t lie, I wouldn’t mind doing. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐮𝐭, 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤, 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤? A little boost of writing inspiration and confidence wouldn’t hurt, right? Five rules I broke to set me free as a writer. Rule five: write to be published. In the six years I've been running creative writing workshops, I've noticed a trend of writers stuck in the assumption we write only when we have something to say. ... translation: write only if your words are going to be published. Talk about pressure! I've been there. I kept getting rejection letters for my fiction in 2017. I kept sitting down to write with the laser attention in wanting to be published. Guess what? No publication. 😉 I built the Ideas Write Now workshop during that period. I sought accountability. I found something more amazing. The weekly workshop turned into a place to finish stories in one sitting. Stories in existence out of the pure joy of creating. From all the weeks of writing stories that "went nowhere" my writing muscles toned. I broke through rejection letters that year having three nonfiction pieces published and collaborating on a book of flash fiction. Bestselling writers are no different from others except in three ways. I started my writing journey by reading. I made it a habit and I always wondered how people could think of such exceptional stories that make millions of people fall in love with them. It took me a long time to find the answer to that wondering. The answer was persistence. I am sure everyone reading this right now has had experiences when they think they have uncovered a million-dollar idea, some people have that moment once every week. The only difference between a success story and a potential idea is action. Unfortunately, many aspiring writers face obstacles that hinder them from pursuing their dreams: #1 Doubt in the relevance of their writing: Some individuals struggle with the belief that others would find value in their words. #2 Sustaining faith through the lengthy journey: Maintaining unwavering confidence during the time it takes to see tangible progress is a common challenge. #3 Navigating societal pressures and self-doubt: Overcoming external and internal pressures can be daunting, particularly for those grappling with self-doubt. #4 Tedious process of editing and revising: While some may conceive a brilliant idea initially, refining and perfecting it through numerous edits, brainstorming sessions, and revisions is often necessary for success. Of course, there are external problems that keep you from going after the dreams that you've had since you were a child. This Common Writing Advice is a Myth: What You Should Do Instead "Write what you know." While this advice by Mark Twain aims to simplify the writing process, it can limit creativity and exploration. Why It's Limiting: ✍ Restricts writing and storytelling to personal experiences. ✍ Discourages research and exploration of new ideas. ✍ Prevents writers from diving into fictional or unfamiliar territories. What to Do Instead: 👉 Research: Explore and study topics that you find intriguing, even if they're outside your knowledge base. 👉 Be Curious: Let your interests guide your writing journey. Explore new genres, perspectives, and styles. 👉 Seek Diverse Experiences: Engage with various cultures, ideas, and communities. 👉 Practice Empathy: Put yourself in the shoes of your characters. Myth #2 👇🏽 Writers write in isolation. Reality: While that is a true statement on one level, overall, it is false. As a writer, it is just you and the blank page in front of you, yes. But that is just one part of the writing process, and not even the first part. As I mentioned above, pre-writing and planning come first, and talking to others about your ideas and writing is part of that process. Then, after you sit down and compose the first draft, it is vital to receive feedback from others. Writing workshops and peer responses, mentors, editors, and proofreaders… all can help provide much needed input for you to consider during the revision and editing phases. Before technological advances such as telephones and the internet, writers still created communities in which they corresponded or collaborated with each other. For instance, many wrote letters that sometimes had to be shipped overseas, so they would not receive a response for weeks. Still, they communicated. Today, social media takes the correspondence of old to a whole new level. Still, writers may draft in isolation; however, they flourish in communities.
