Working in a lean team for client projects always brings out the beauty of the 'Avenger effect'🦸in us all on this planet. The beauty in the dead silence when a question is posed. I took a break from work and binge-watched Arcane season 1 and 2. (Un)fortunately, it struck the nerve on a thought I have been grappling with for a while: Are We Playing Catch-Up? As the creative director of a budding animation studio, Amaranthine Media Production Studios (AMPS), I feel the excitement of potential but I am also confronted daily by the stark reality of the journey ahead. With our flagship project, Kiliwe the Timebender, we’re working hard to tell African stories in a way that resonates globally. But as we inch forward, the world around us accelerates, introducing fresh techniques, AI-driven animation tools, and international collaborations that we’re not yet able to fully integrate. Our dream is to create something extraordinary—an ecosystem where stories, communities, gaming apps, merchandise and young minds converge. Yet, with each production hurdle, technology leap, and budgetary constraint, I sometimes wonder: Are we ever going to be able to play in the big leagues? The race isn’t just about keeping up with the latest tools and styles. It’s about surviving and thriving amid financial challenges, securing the talent and partnerships needed to achieve a consistent level of quality, and breaking into markets that are saturated with content from studios with decades of experience. The industry giants have the budget, the tools, and a head start we’re still striving to match. Perhaps we need to redefine what success means for us. We may not have the vast teams of animators that global studios do. But we have something powerful: an unyielding passion for storytelling, and a unique perspective shaped by our culture and experiences. There’s hope in the fact that audiences today are actively seeking fresh narratives and new voices. Our stories, grounded in African heritage and crafted with care, have an authenticity that can shine through and make a difference. Playing in the big leagues may feel like a distant dream, but dreams have to start somewhere. For us, that dream begins with focusing on our strengths—authentic narratives, relatable characters, and a commitment to creating content that adds value beyond entertainment. While the path forward is uncertain, our small victories remind us to keep going. Whether it’s the success of our Timebender Fest, the loyalty of our Timebender Tribe, or the collaboration opportunities that have begun to surface, these are signs that we’re moving in the right direction, one step at a time. If you’re part of an industry that feels out of reach, take heart. Innovation doesn’t always require having the biggest budgets or the best tools. Sometimes, it’s about leveraging what makes you unique and creating something irreplaceable. So, are we playing catch-up? Maybe.
