“Alcohol-free mixology wizard”- Bon Appétit, author, award-winning bartender, NASM Certified Wellness Coach
Bartenders aren’t there to make you happy. 😮 They can, at best, support the conditions of your happiness. Provide a good environment, give good service, make a delicious drink. As bartenders, we do have certain tools in our toolkit. Alcohol is one of them. Alcohol makes us feel a certain way. It relaxes us initially, perhaps making us feel more sociable. There are other things that can do that, too. Caffeine, cannabis, certain herbs. Those are called functional ingredients and many have been used for thousands of years. They’ve become part of non-alcoholic beverages. Think of them as more tools. But get this: if the point is to feel good, then the only thing capable of doing that is you. Happiness is a long term commitment. It isn’t an ingredient or a drink. As Maria Bastasch said this morning when we were discussing, there are entire religions dedicated to happiness and they still don’t always get people there. The point is: bartenders can create the conditions of happiness and we should have more than one tool. But, ultimately, happiness is each person’s responsibility. Today I get to speak about this and more at the United States Bartenders' Guild Diamond Jubilee with two of my favorite people, Maria Bastasch and Lynnette Marrero. Sponsored by the yummy Aplós. If you’re in town, check it out. A Better Buzz: How to Make Great Non-alcoholic Cocktails with Functional Ingredients presented by Derek Brown, Maria Bastasch, and Lynnette Marrero (Sponsored by Aplos) https://lnkd.in/ge7ybTkb #mindfuldrinking #alcoholfree #nonalcoholic #boozefree #alcoholfreelife #mocktails #nonalcoholicdrink #noalcohol #zeroproof #mindfulness #wellness #functionalingredients #usbg

Kentucky gets more booze Visitors than Scotland, in spite of being a much smaller population than Scotland AND having less Distilleries. Ireland's Whiskey Tourism drive ALSO outperforms Scotland. It's tiny, in comparison with Scotch. Tequila Tourism in Mexico has Books, Websites, Trains. It also has properly-funded, Government involvement. Meanwhile, in Scotland, it's a hopeless, really embarrassing state of affairs. It's all about 'the brands', Scotland doesn't individually capitalise on being the World's best Whisky Country. Many think it already does but you have to think, Scotch is drink named after a Country. It should have unique Training, a Website, Books, Apps, a Network, all funded and benefitting Scotland, not people in Hong Kong. Scotland has NOTHING as well-funded as Kentucky. When it comes to funding Scotch Whisky Tourism, Scotland doesn't. Scotch is a heavily (some say, ridiculously) Taxed, UK cashcow. It's not one that benefits Scotland properly. If you look at the Scotch Whisky Association and Visitscotland's all-over-the shop-Tourism drive, it's laughably amateur and hopelessly under-funded. Nobody is in charge. As the link below shows, its really easy to promote an Iconic Booze Tourism product. With lots of money. That's how. The Scottish Government needs a Scotch Whisky Tourism Budget and Policy, immediately. As Financial results and burgeoning world markets show, we can't just leave it up to the Producers who can (and do) make 'Whisky' anywhere, even though this would need to be the starting point. It needs to be a combined initiative for Scotland, THEN for 'The Industry'. There ALREADY are examples of Big Distillery Players coming together to improve things. There already are several joint initiatives. What's a few £million, to £multi billion Corporations? Some, the Corporations of the Richest people in the World. #ScotchWhiskyTruths #TheScottishGovernment #ScotchWhiskyAssociation #VisitScotland

The menu tasting was a tough job, but as CEO I felt it was essential that I take on the difficult task of sampling an extensive variety of dishes, from starters to mains and then desserts, and more buffet options and sweet treats than you could shake a stick at. So what did make the cut? Will we be dining on duo of pork shoulder and loin with apple mash and honey roasted veg, or wild mushroom ragout with potato rosti and char-grilled asparagus? Did the popping candy cheesecake make the final selection, and was the raspberry panacotta superior to the chocolate brownie? These, and many other questions, including how is IT and digital leadership evolving, how can you enable cultural change around cybersecurity, and who will be last-person-standing in the bar (not mentioning any names, Dan Hall) will be answered on October 4, 5 and 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Oxford Belfry in Thame. We have a limited number of places left, so book now to avoid missing out: https://lnkd.in/eTpWWNxP #CharityITLeaders #Charities #NotForProfit #IT #Digital #Networking #ProfessionalDevelopment
